I'm kind of scared to log in

2.1 is live! Hooray!
I played the beta, and it was fine.
Now, I see videos of plasma-spamming NPC, read about CMDRs dying in seconds, missions that don't work, bounties that are next to worthless, and just an endless amount of complaining and claims that the game is broken, ruined, a bug-infested mess, etc.

As I said, I played the Beta, and I had a great spiffing time. Before that, I had a break from ED, lasting a few months.
Reading all these gripes and complaints, I'm (somewhat foolishly) afraid to log back in. I don't want to lose my DBS for no reason, but it seems dumb to not play, just because some people think the game is borked. After all, the beta was fun. I only died a few times (all of which were tense, exciting dogfights)

Is the game really as broken as "everyone" seems to say now? If I log in, am I gonna have a bad time?
I don't grind. I pootle around, doing missions, trying to do things I find relatively meaningful. Sure, some things are frustrating, but this game wasn't made for just me. I still like it.

Try for yourself. It works for me. Combat is definitely harder now, so be prepared for that and don't bring your most expensive ship to your first scrap.

I haven't had any issues. Maybe I'm just super lucky. Only real difference I've noticed regarding the AI is that the NPCs seem to get around in combat better.

Just take it slow and don't bite of more than you can chew and you'll likely be fine.

That being said, YMMV, apparently.

Cheers and fly smart, Commander. :)

Be afraid! Be very afraid!

Fear is good.
Fear will keep you alive.
Complacency will get you dead! :D

But to be fair - it's not half as bad as some are making out.
Trading still works! :)

Give it a try maybe with a new and cheaper ship if you can afford it.
I still have lots of fun in 2.1 and AI problems are feasible, there are some good advices here in the forum. The game is clearly not broken ;-) but, I admit, more dangerous than before.

Take it all with a big pinch of salt ;-) Lots of us are having a great time. I haven't yet seen the crazy plasma bug in the wild and I've done a metric tonne of combat since 2.1 came out :) I'm kind of waiting to meet one of the crazed NPCs actually so I can get some video but so far all the NPCs with plasma have behaved quite normally. They must save the mad machine guns ones for special occasions. You could always start out by buying one of the little ships with a 2/3 sized engine and try out the new uber speed engines you can buy from Farseer (without any rank) those basically make you unkillable since you can run from anything.

The game certainly not as broken as the vocal minority makes it out to be.

Sure, it's a little harder to kill high rank npcs and RES farming is not as lucrative as it used to be (it was a joke if you ask me) but overall 2.1 is a huge improvement. Don't be scared, just be prepared to run away if things go awry. Also, I recommend unpledging from any powers but that's about it. No need to be alarmed. Don't fly with insurance as always.

Edit to add: Keep in mind, most of the people who are very vocally bashing the game right now were already bashing anything and everything about the game before the patch too. If anything, most of them were at it since forever. There's no making some people happy, you just gotta learn how to filter it out. Also, most people (myself included) are really happy with the game so they don't hang around posting in the forum all the time. They are out there enjoying the game.

I would hazard a guess that this particular bug may have been hotfixed in silently and quickly as it's a gamebreaker.

Just over 150 NPC encounters and nothing has killed me yet. HAd some close calls that's for sure. Have yet to run into one of the Insta-killers. NPCs are tougher on the whole. Be prepared for that.

As it is with bugs its impossible to say if you encounter some or not. All I can say is I have played many hours in 2.1 and never encountered a npc one shoting me, I have a great time!

Don't worry about it. Keep in mind, when bugs happen to a few people, they swarm to the forums to report, while a majority may never experience those bugs, thereby creating an inflated perception of problems.

I've not yet encountered one of those AI that spew forth death. Maybe i've just been lucky.

Anyway, get in game and give it a go.

Just the usual drama you get on forums. Not having any issues here, the rapid weapons fire is defintely a bug, I've yet to see it happen and I've been up against a lot of NPC's.

If you survived Beta you will be fine in 2.1, bulk of NPC complaints are from people with poor pip management & used to extremely tame 2.0 NPC's.

I spent about three hours bounty hunting in Hazres and high res sites, with a specialized FAS and a multipurpose Python, I haven't died yet. The encounters were harder than before but seemed balanced to me. Seeing some other people's issues, I believe unfair situations come from occasional bugs (which I have yet to encounter), and not a dramatic change in balance.

If you're scared to go back in, buy a cheap ship and test the waters to see for yourself.

Some of the NPCs are harder and fly better equipped ships. But you can avoid them if you don't want to fight.

If you are scared to lose your DBS:

a) Equip military armor, chaff and learn to run away if the NPC is to strong. The DBS is a very capable ship and fast, good to run away (I know, I'm good at running away in the DBS - from NPCs and CMDRs).

or

b) Buy a Sidewinder. Seriously that ship got very useful with 2.1. A grade it and fly to one of the Engineers and buy a enhanced thruster module. Maybe add a Wake scanner and fly around, have fun while scanning every ship and wake you see. Those scans will be useful for modifying your DBS (or the Sidewinder). It costs next to nothing and with the faster thrusters you can run away form almost everything. Did I mention it's fun?

No deaths here so far, the new AI is amazing, and its finally proving to be a real challenge :) had to flee more times than i dare to admit but hey, finally we Hunt for the bounty not just bash seal cubs who spin in one place. never played this much without breaks since the game went live, 2.1 is truly a great expansion and fresh air in the vacuum of space.

When you boot into the game, grab a Sidey, Eagle or Cobra, A-rate it then head out and find out for yourself.

I'm not seeing the doom and gloom being asserted by others; I'm having fun. I've stayed out of High and HazRes (from my Beta experience I know that's bad, m'kay) and am doing RES, missions, planetary landings and collecting materials for engineer improvements. The interdictions are manageable and not an issue so far.

Good luck.

It is not that bad, the worse I had was being chase by an adder while in my very defensive Anaconda and shields going down rather fast. But on the whole outside of res or combat zones it is not that bad, do not be scared. Although I am combat novice so....

My theory is some are inexperienced Robigo pilots who made millions in a few hours, bought ships they were incapable of flying and paid the price. Shortcuts don't always pay off long-term.
