Hardware & Technical I'm looking to buy a 1440p 144hz monitor; will my gtx 960 be powerful enough to max elite?

many thanks.

p.s. If anyone has a link to a recommended monitor please could you add it.

My budget is about £400ish

I was searching for that kind of monitor a few weeks ago and end with: ASUS MG279Q and Acer Predator XF270HU
They are freesync, but there are Gsync counterparts, and a bit over your budget.

In the end I bought nothing. It seems backlight bleeding is a big issue in this kind of monitors.

The GTX 960 is basically meant specifically for 1080p gaming. For that I adore the card.

But forget about higher resolutions. ;)

Elite Dangerous is very demanding. While my new GTX 1070 is a lot more powerfull even it would be unable to run that resolution at 144Hz.

Currently i run 4k DSR on my Full HD Monitor (it looks great btw.) with Ultra Settings, but i get framerate drops below 45 FPS depending on the scene.

Ummm Elite Dangerous is not very demanding, something like Witcher 3 or GTA V is very demanding. You're getting 45 FPS because your running 4k DSR, that's your doing not the games...

I have a great 21:9 LG monitor that is 2560 x 1080p, bagged for about £250, ultrawide is amazing, and my GTX 460 loves it, with everything at medium for 30-45fps. But as others say, a 960 is not enough for more.

Sadly I don't think your 960 will cut it. At 1440p/ultra settings you'll be looking at around 45-50 fps in empty space and 20-25 in stations or on planets. Nowhere close to the 144fps needed to satisfy your 144Hz monitor.

I used to have a 970, at those settings with that resolution I would only see approx 65-70fps in space and 40-45 planetside.

I currently have a 1070, and at those settings I'd only manage the 144fps in empty space, anywhere else would see a drop to 125-130.

I play at 2560x1440 (60 Hz) with maxed graphics on a GTX 980 / i7 4790k / 16GB RAM — Runs clean at 60 FPS when not much is going on, but I do get framerate drops in extraction sites when there are a lot of ships firing at each other — At close range to the explosions and particle effects it can drop to 45 FPS.

Thanks for that, i'd toyed with getting a 1440 monitor but had my doubts about the 970s ability to power it, you've just confirmed my suspicions....

I'm running a 144hz Gsynch monitor with my GTX970 and planet side I average in the 50's framerate wise. Running a 144hz monitor in this game is a waste of time as you will not see any benefit. 60 FPS will b as smooth as you need for this game but you won't d that with the 960 at ultra detail.

144hz monitors work best in games like Battlefield, COD and other FPS games where any lag can kill you. Racing games benefit as well from the high rate and smoothness that 144hz will offer.

Game like Elite will benefit from a being able to run a higher resolution and more detail. As long as your video card can run smoothly crank it up. Games like Battlefield 4 work better at lower detail to keep any lag from causing you death.

I'm running a single GTX960 Gaming 4GB in 1920x1200 and it runs great. Everything is pretty much maxed out except shadows are turned down a little bit.

Thanks for the answers everyone.

I was going to upgrade as I have heard quite a few people now, say that going from 1080p to 1440p gives a huge boost in quality.

Do you think that a GTX 960, (with lowered graphical settings but resolution at 1440p), will be able to give me the resolution quality boost and run with at least a playable fps? or do you think that the lowered graphical settings will cancel out the resolution improvement?

thanks

Thanks MalcYorks,
I think I'm going to take the plunge!

Does anyone have any other recommended 1440p monitors around my budget that are suitable for the proposed setup?

Thanks in advance

A 1070 will be able to push elite to 144fps, a 960 won't even come close. If you're getting a high refresh monitor, you need a card and CPU to push the game to those frame rates. For the record, I'm now running a 1080 at 4k native and am getting around 100fps on ED with ultra settings. I used to get around 50-70 on my old OC'd 980TI G1 with the same settings. 4K doesn't scale very well, 1440p will scale much better.

Bringing up 4K resolution is not relevant to the OP's quest. The resolution of 4K monitors is 3840x2160 and a decent IPS one is well outside the OP's budget.

A GTX960 will need to be run at less than Ultra in E D I think for 2560x1440 and certainly won't meet 144hz refresh. I don't know why 144hz would be important, 60hz runs fine in my opinion.

My monitor is under £300 now on amazon:

I have had it for well over a year and am extremely happy with it and I have to say that the move up to x1440 from x1060 made an amazing difference.

In general, I choose higher graphics settings over higher resolution.
Mainly, because your eyes stop noticing low(ish) resolution after a very short time, while gaming.
(Unless you regularly flick between the two).

But, you will notice if your ship or scene looks uglier than it did before, and you won't forget, or adapt. lol

My advice(as a cheap skate), is keep the 960, and stick with or get a good but cheap 1080p monitor(60hz, plenty to choose from).
Then save up for a better graphics card, then a new monitor(or even VR), after that, as their prices will continue to fall.

its been amazing for 8 years, buy its starting to get dark banding so I have to upgrade. ( I use it for watching a lot of tv and movies)

I can up the monitor budget to £500 or so , but I just can't get one of the new 1070, 1080 gaming graphics cards, at the same time.
