I'm starting to feel really guilty for reccomending this to my friends!!

Well personally all my friends read the news articles about "offline-gate" and told me they wouldn't be buying the game now.

So I guess I'll be playing alone... Not that I could have grouped up with them anyways with the random start.

Well look at it this way, they clearly just wanted to play offline, so you would not have been playing with them anyway.

have you considered plotting a course and flying to the same system and teaming up if you do that you should end up in the same instance? it is a persistent world so if you want to stay together one have to stick around the same systems when you play individually.

In game comms work so you can talk to each other.

The only issue really is when interdicted you don't drop out together, whilst this is not in yet I believe it is planned that players can tether which would address this issue. Otherwise, you should be supercruising together, if you get interdicted you show as white on the scanner, your brother could drop out onto that (may not work, but worth a try)

ok My friend and I did this in Beta2.x and Beta3.x
Made a group.
Both routers in DMZ mode, UPnP enabled.
Both of us in the same system outside of the same station. Same system at the Nav Point. We tried it all.

Can we see each other? Did we ever see each other?

NO and again NO.

He disappointed, has given up playing now. and plays games with working multiplayer.

IMHO E: D is a single player game with an always online DRM, but it guises as online multiplayer. (SimCity lessons learn't yet?)

Elite has never been a coop game and Ed is no different. The problem is that at the première the demo given was a coop demo and some of the marketing has been as such too, which when you look at it is a misrepresentation of what ED actually is 90% of the time.

To be fair to the op it was marketed as such. I have been following the game for some time and it was always their intention to have it as a call of duty style coop style game. In testing across a lan it worked well over the internet it has proved trickier. Many of the problems the game has now were always admitted to being challenging from the start and not entirely solved. I love it personally but...
It is being marketed as a completed fully functioning mmo with coop play etc and it isn't.
Ed was meant to be elite but different but currently its just elite.

Although some of the ops issues may be addressed when the game starts for real. Hopefully most of the action wont be at interdiction sites but will be live around groups of worlds involved in these injected events where there will be combat zones etc which you and your friends will be able to hopefully find the same instance if they are in your friends list however i hope you are also geographically close due to p2p considerations.

Actually, its not because they couldn't play offline. Its just that they don't trust companies that act like EA.

It sounds like there are some legitimate concerns when it comes to the implementation of multiplayer functionality, and some very good community ideas around the limitations. I do hope that some of the ideas mentioned make their way into the game. I've also noticed people mention that when they communicate through external voice chat options, they are able to coordinate effectively enough. Since that is how I intend to communicate with my friends when they start playing, I find that a relief. I was concerned it would be as annoying to meet up as in DayZ, where you essentially have no ability to group at all within the game and everything is done through outside organization.

The impression that I got from the earlier trailer and the recent event video showing the capital ship battle, was that calling in nearby friends for some group battles would be reasonably seamless. I have to assume FD would be aware it was being perceived this way, and intend to fulfill that expectation.
