iMac retina 5k

Is anyone able to tell me if the mac version of the game is going to support 5k screen? Looking for an excuse to buy one!!

I think ED exposes the resolutions available, so at a guess I imagine it will be possible. But I'm not too sure about the iMacs GPU being up to the task, its a notebook part and looks a bit underpowered for higher resolution gaming.

Yes, that's certainly a concern, although currently struggling under bootcamp with an old iMac at 15fps! so anything better is a bonus!

Yes. David has said (can't remember where) the ED is "future proofed" and will support 4k and even 8k (someday).

current models? no way, MacBook Pro? even the top of the range! the only one with discrete gpu, no way! iMac 5k, playing a game isn't the same as icons on a desktop at that Rez! Mac Pro? defo not now or in the next year!
mac's just don't have te pixel power, heck for 5k neither do most pcs!

It'll display it at whatever resolution the OS provides, but running at a decent FPS is another matter. I can run the game under Bootcamp at 2560x1440 with max settings at over 30fps, and to be honest I don't think it needs any more to look good. The max Bootcamp supports is 3840x2160, and the performance is not too good.

This is on an iMac Retina 5K with the i5 processor and M295X GPU.

I'd be interested in seeing the 2 GPU options running ED but it seems that combination of owner isn't around yet.

Yep, 4K@60 in bootcamped windows is how we designed it to work.

5k@60 in OS X, and even with the biggest Intel CPU and biggest AMD GPU fitted its moving *a lot* of pixels.. 5120x2880 per frame..

Well, I'd certainly be happy running it 2560x1440, I'm sure it must look pretty good. Found this article too which proved interesting. http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/10/the-retina-imac-and-its-5k-display-as-a-gaming-machine/

Bear in mind Alien Isolation is very kind on lower end hardware- putting something like Battlefield 4 might be a better test. My seven year old PC runs Alien Isolation with everything maxed, unlike B4 which is a pixellated flickbook.......

Here's the thing though. I haven't really played any games at all since Frontier, so it's only Elite dangerous I'm interested in! Looks like I got lucky with my choice of game!

I made the jump & purchased an iMac 5k, i7, 295x & 16GB.

All of the following details are on Ultra preset details & the widest field of view.

At 2560x1440 I'm getting a pretty solid 60fps in space, around planets & asteroid belts (In space without vsync it's about 75fps or so in space). In space stations it's about bounces between 40-50fps.

At 3840x2160, stations are around 18-20fps while space is around 25fps or so (Though I didn't spend much time at this resolution).

I knew not to expect the ultimate gaming machine, but the performance for me is just fantastic.

I have a 5K with M295X. I get 40fps inside stations, 60fps everywhere else (v-synced) with all settings on max (no AA) and 2560*1440.

I think this is pretty impressive for a mobile GPU.

We must get the message out there for all Mac users to jump ship to the OS X version as soon as possible. The more Macs that FD see in use the more time they will spend optimising it.

I have a solution to this problem - I use my iMac purely as a display for my uber-laptop. Full resolution, 60FPS. Looks gorgeous. The only downside is that I actually have to boot my iMac into OSX to enable Target Display Mode to make this happen.
