Imagine Elite Dangerous with MASSIVE space battles, with objectives to destroy or capture objectives

Prologue: This isn't a serious "suggestion" for the devs. I have no hope this would ever be something they can do. But one can have an imagination.

I have a dream. A dream where dozens upon dozens of CMDRs organize and take the fights directly against their enemies, whether it being against other humans or the Thargoids.

If you are even remotely familiar with how the PVP aspects work in Elder Scrolls Online in Cyrodiil, in MY mind, I can picture Elite Dangerous acting in the same way.

MASSIVE wings (or squadrons) taking to a battlefield, capturing or destroying objectives from a star base, or a landable planet fortress.

This whole concept doesn't have to be PvP. All enemies could be AI. It would work just as well.

But imagine... having several wings all coordinated. One wing attacks the bases defenses. Another wing attacks the launchpads to prevent reinforcements. Another wing works their way toward the base's power grid. All working in coordinated efforts.

You can even have wings that are outfitted SPECIFICALLY with missiles or torpedoes for massive damage against structures. You can have other wings outfitted specifically for dogfighting and speed to take out defense forces.

Now THIS is how a squadron with a Fleet Carrier would be ideal. Be able to have a relatively close spawn point, and be able to re-arm when needed during the battle.

This could even work in on the defensive side! Wings specifically outfitted with repair drones to fix defenses, etc... Hell, I can even see traders running to get supplies for the base!

Just imagining this gives me goosebumps. I can clearly see these fights going on, how they progress, and how they would work!

In my opinion, this would be... almost like a separate game mode similar to Arena... in a way. If it would relatively hard to coordinate that many players to one area of space, unless it was truly worth the time and effort.

I would say maybe have it similar to Multi-Crew, where you can could "telepresence" to the battlefield. Though, I would argue we could use our own ships. Though I don't think having "pre-determined" ships and loadouts would be a disaster.

TL;DR: If Frontier ever decided to make a sequel of sorts to Elite:Dangerous, HUGE SPACE BATTLES would be something that would be INCREDIBLE if this was a feature. Alas, with this current game we have, I don't think it is built for, nor could be modified, to do this.

Maybe on a "grand" scale it would take a lot of players to do what the OP suggests but something has to be done about the silly implementation of combat in this game.

It appears that in the 34th century we have reverted to 18th & 19th century battle tactics where each side assembles on a chosen battle field and slugs it out! Maybe this as done for a reason. To reduce the numbers of civilian casualties? Is there something in canon that suggests that is what the galactic powers decided? But for us, the game player it is just boring. Go to a CZ, kill enemy, rinse and repeat.

I would like to see some kind of objectives;

Lead a flight of NPCs to interdict and destroy an enemy transport convoy
Protect a wing of ships carrying torpedoes bound to attack a capital ship (oh that's right they are indestructible)
Base/settlement attacks using ships and SRVs
Defend bases and settlements.
The list goes on.

These things would not be all that hard but it would require some reworking of the missions and some of the assets in game. We currently cannot damage bases or settlements, we cannot destroy capital ships.

One can only hope!

Ere, no thanks, not what I am looking for in this game.

"Keelboi Kingz destroyed my fleet carrier!"

This community can't even handle someone destroying another player's ship who is genuinely listed as ENEMY on the HUD, courtesy of Powerplay.

What happens when someone loses an executive asset?

And yes, loss is required, as that's how conflict in ED works.

OP, though you acknowledge your suggestion is a bit over-the-top, it still highlights the complete lack of imagination that's gone into the gameplay scenarios which are currently in-game. For example, the only two scenarios where you'll be in combat where you won't just be in boring blank empty space or yet another identical patch of planetary ring, are some fleet battles where there are capital ships, and skimmer missions. That's it.

God help me but I still retain hope that some day they'll figure out how to add some interesting and varied gameplay scenarios to their game (be they heist/sabotage/virus upload/proper assassination/trench run/whatever scenarios...)

When Thargoids started to appear I believed that we were starting to see Combat Zones infested with little alien ships and such instead of the regular CZ full of humans fighting against each other. That at least would make more sense and we have no choice at all...unite and fight against them as it should.

Yet as of now we have some POI's in the form of "teasers" showing some damaged ships or stations and the casual Thargoid encounter and that's just it. You have to read a forum to get where "they are" or through Galnet.

PS: Don't even talk about what is needed to do so you can get the required weapons to fight against them. I'm not quite sure yet if Frontier want us to work in the game or play with the game...(I rather be paid to play instead of the other way around at this point, no other game gave me this feeling ever)

In a fight with 14 players in the instance the other day.

I'll admit it got very confusing in amongst the asteroids working out who was where etc.

Was cool though. 11 v 3 with most of the 11 shooting me was great. Never seen so much weapon fire.

+Rep

I like it

It'd be really cool yeah.

Game would have to be designed around it though from day one, I know you said it's not a realistic actual suggestion though so yeah, would be cool for sure.

Awesome idea. I was doing a skimmer mission and my immediate thought was "why are there no planetary base assault wing missions?"
Guys in srvs and ships working together to fully disable a base.
