Imagine if your NPC crew could help you haul cargo?

Why are there 3 slots even? Who in their right mind would retain more than one?
A leftover from when NPC crew would be immediately killed with no rebuy available if your ship got blown up. Basically allowed you to have spares for something risky if you didn't want to use your 'good' one.

I’ve imagined it. But as we don’t load our cargo at all I don’t see what help they could be.

You could be imagining something different to me though.

I imagine they see themselves leading a wing of cargo ships piloted by the hired help so they can deliver an extra 3 ships worth of cargo each run assuming they all get through.

My imagination has trouble seeing them getting through more than one instance change.

In that case, I can imagine all the NPCs losing the interdiction being destroyed and people coming on here to throw salt because they lost all that cargo…

Another ship inferiors thread, I see... 🤔

Perhaps not for extracorporeal hauling, but I'd love to be able to see the freeloaders I hire.
And possibly look them in the eyes when I dismiss them.

I've thought about how to improve upon the NPC crew experience for a long time now and one idea was a furloughing system where you pay them a lump sum unemployment package based on their current rank to go find other work while still retaining their contract. Then when you want to recall them, you must wait out a timer based on how long they've been furloughed for as they complete their outstanding transactions. It always seemed like a bad system where they were completely worthless except for one specific task which dependingly could be executed only very rarely and yet you must still pay them to loaf around in luxury unless you were to give up all progress made on improving their rank.

I mean, these days I guess it means very little due the in-game economy going completely sideways and my Bank of Zaonce account topping tens of billions with little meaningful way of actually denting it. Even rebuys aren't a thing anymore in most circumstances after you hit a certain pledged power rank. I guess it's only really consequential for new players who just scrimped enough for a Krait II (or Keelback as nobody seriously considers flying the 'sader and the FGS is locked behind a rank grind  )

I could make a megathread compiling these suggestions but I just don't feel like wasting the effort since FDev has not indicated that they would revisit any aspect of crew at all. Would be nice to improve upon the interactivity of our crew and see them hanging around the ship in-station or have them sit in the cockpit/bridge (I know some CMDRs are against this due to how ugly the crew are).

It would be great but we do not have even autopilot... or NPC to work as one on multicrew ships.
Anyway I do not have to imagine that. I have other game when I have a lot more than that.
The closest thing to NPC hauling stuff I can think of while being still withing limitations of ED would be delayed cargo delivery between station and fleet carrier- made in the same way as moving ships/modules between stations.

According to forum wisdom - I have no idea if it’s actually based on anything from FDev - that’s the main reason we can’t store ships with cargo on board.

I don’t see (risk free) transfers of cargo ever becoming a thing.
