Immersion Destroying Npcs

Momo, there's LOTS of things we know take place in the game that we, the players, have no ability to do, probably never will have, so what's the problem? And we know there's a thriving black market for ships, we just don't have access to it...yet. Hopefully, between too much longer, we'll be able to buy Imperial or Federation or Alliance rank required ships from said black market, without having the required rank, just enough creds to cover the cost. WE can't do that yet, but the NPCs obviously can, so..what's the problem?

CMDRs don't have access to black market ships? My Clipper and Courier were smuggled to independent space where I bought them. I didn't need to enter Empire space. Am I breaking the immersion too?

I agree with what a few previous posters have said;

Commanders seem to be Privateers to a large degree. I just see Pirates as Commanders gone rogue or with low morals. Nothing about being a Pirate in this game implies you started with an AK-47 and worked your way up. You could have STARTED with the Gunship you bought before you become a bitter and jaded CMDR.

the immersion break here is not the pilot names, but rather the fact that the pirates were flying ships from the opposite faction and both require rank to unlock.

Well, it doesnt seems very strange to me.
NPCs, like players, should be able to rank up (theoretically) with empire/faction and/or own every ships, even when pirates.

I think this is weird too, players should have to make a choice empire or feds, its weird that you can be highest rank with both, other people have said this too, a galaxy in a cold war should not have the two sides being all buddy buddy.

Edit: Just my opinion though, i think it would make more sense.

Agreed. It makes as much sense as when I saved a Federal miner and the Fed security pilot in his useless viper, after which they immediately attack me from friendly fire wherein every ship was given the results of an insta-scan. Now i dont save anyone...i allow them all to reach till about 30% then i wade in...

Funny you bring that up, I bought my first Clipper in a Sirius Corp system, quite a few jumps away from Imperial space, because I'd heard a rumour that that particular station had one for sale on the black market at below market price :)

Does that break immersion? Hell no, it makes it better, since we know black markets exist in the game, naturally someone would be offering special items like a 'slightly used' Imperial Clipper, found floating off some moon somewhere, abandoned! Don't mind those stains, just some red wine that spilled there...

I heard about the discount too, but didn't know where the Sirius Corp system was and the info disappeared shortly after I saw it. I stopped in independent space to refuel when I got lucky in seeing a limited supply of Clippers and Couriers that had been smuggled in. The Clipper was a couple mil below the market price, but was above the Sirius listed price of 17 mil. I think I paid 20 mil. Happily so. :)

Considering the Empire has had a few ship sales of late where all rank requirements have been dropped, I see no problem with pirates having ships that would normally require a certain rank to get being winged up with their team, who have ships from the 'other' side.

From my commander's POV, it's normally Imp ships that are used by pirates, but then my commander does tend to fly in Alliance space... :)

What if they both have rank in Federation but npc in courier bought it when there were no rank requirements for imperial ships?

According to your logic I am immersion breaking. I spend most of time in Imperial space, fly a fed dropship which I ranked up for and I am aligned to Aisling Duval. I also regularly destroy fed and Imperial ships alike.

I own a Clipper.

I do not and will not hold Empire rank.

Ever.

But Empire bias is so strong - that if I get a chance to buy one of their "effete and silly looking" ridiculously OP ships.

I take it.

Like these pirates have.
