Imperial Ludonarrative Dissonance

In RL I would not even consider subscribing to the ideologies behind the Federation or the Empire. But then "someone" took the decision to lock the games two biggest ships behind a grind wall that can only be described as total rank. Now I quite happily trade slaves and sell drugs, because, well...I want to fly the nice things before I turn 80.

Anyway, to dabble in the OP's original point. I love the immersion aspects of Elite, read all the books, imagine the space life. I wish I could take the game itself seriously enough to be able to map that imagination.

Hi all o7

Aforemention, for those who don't know what Ludonarrative dissonance is, there are lots of very compelling articles and videos online. For those who aren't interested I'll sum it up as best I can in a sentence or two, but please remember there's a LOT more to it than just this.

Ludonarrative dissonance is the term given to the confliction within a player's mind during a moral or questionable situation in a game. Examples include financial gain at the cost of others, missions which involve killing innocents, and purposeful manipulation and degradation of another in-game character for the sake of orders or personal gain.

Moving on :p

When I started playing the game I did a LOT of research into the major powers. The Imperials seemed almost Utopian focussing on honour, and financial status being determined by personal acts rather than corporate success. When I was grinding Imperial ranks I did everything I could to see things from their perspective. Imperial slavery (by law at least) is more like community service, with benefits and good treatment as standard. Having the wrath of the Empire come down on you was almost always because of an immoral or disrespectful act you had performed rather than words on paper telling you what you can and cannot do. I even somewhat forgave their clear disregard for sentient life during the Empire's founding, seeing as the rarity of intelligent species was taken for granted by all of humanity. Pair that with the Empress at the time wanting to promote peace (her brother quickly killed her off and forced his power upon the people), I couldn't blame the Empire for their ancestor's actions hundreds of years after the fact.

I spent my whole time grinding overlooking, forgiving, and trying to understand Imperial Society. But my last rank-up mission for Duke has torn me once again. It was an Imperial Navy hit contract, and the target's last words were "I die free". It's stuck with me since it happened two days ago, and I'm racking my brain over what his perspective would have been. Could he have been trying to support his family by the actions the took? Could he have been dishonoured for having a debt and chose not to sell himself into slavery? Could he have been a ruthless criminal that had escaped custody? I will never know, and it really digs at me that I ended his journey.

Combined with everything else I have experienced with the Empire, I can't bring myself to reward my endeavours with the purchase of a Cutter. I have the money, I have the rank, and I sure as hell have the desire. But what are the grounds that it was earned upon, and what would it stand for? At this point, I am seriously considering going through the grind all over again for the Federation to get myself a Corvette instead of making the purchase.

I realise that the Federation has it's fair share of corrupt officials and cooperate greed, and arguably it's no more justifiable. But what are your thoughts on the entire subject? Do you let games get to you when faced with choices like this? How much does it affect you, if at all? And why do you have that opinion?

As a side note, I'd love to hear what others would do in my current situation! :L

Same reason I joined the Empire, man. I read through all of the Elite lore before picking a side, which was certainly interesting to read of course. :)

I'm not sure as to why that NPC would say anything like that, but I have heard the message is the same for the Federation somehow.. RNG probably. Though if you look at Aisling Duval, she is against slavery (cough "Voluntary Work"). For me, I roleplay as an Elite spec-op officer of the Imperial Navy, throwing their rule books out of the window for any advantage the Empire can have against a threat. On a realistic note, I love the atmosphere of Imperial space, the music Frontier has developed, the blue stations, the royal voices of the station traffic control, etc. If you haven't already, I suggest visiting some popular tourist locations, including Carthage. ;)

Had that message from one deserter target after grinding to FAS...then sold it and gave up on the FGS and Corvette. I do have a Cutter, but I'm one of the PF - we have no home.

All warzones, slaves, outlaws and patriots blend together. All leaders and factions...

My love is to my ship, my trust to the PF. All the rest are expendable.

Had that message from one deserter...

I just flat-out don't do deserter assassination missions.
Pirate Lords; yep, Venerable Generals; sometimes - depending on the faction, Deserters; nope.

I suppose it might create some kind of moral dilemma if ED had persistent characters and a deserter might go on to kill innocent people and then become a pirate but, in the mean-time, if people want to flee from a war, good luck to them.

I've never actually taken a "deserter" mission so I dunno if this is possible but, TBH, after finding the deserter I'd be more inclined to take them on-board and deliver them to their destination of choice.

Well, everyone is being used by the Club and Pilots Federation, so it does not matter what you do or who you choose to believe.

To make all the excuses that slavery is somehow okay in 3303
Though, all factions believe slavery is basically okay. There are some which won't personally openly trade slaves themselves, and will consider it a minor infraction if you try to do so in their space, but we're not talking about a loitering-level offence here. They're not anti-slavery, they just prefer it kept quiet.

Depending on your view, the only Power that outlaws all forms of slavery is Pranav Antal- however his benevolent light comes at great personal cost though....can you be a spiritual slave?

Well, I went and got myself the Cutter today. It looks even better up close! I christened her the "Legacy Starship Aurora". I've fitted an upgraded shield and power distributor to get me going on some non-violent endeavours, and have started saving for armament and more capable defenses. So far my only complaint is what a handful it is to fly, I obey the speed limit a lot more often than most and even by MY standards it takes a good long while to set her down.

Anyway, the reason why I'm writing again now is because I've been doing missions back in Federal space to earn some cash and Federal reputation at the same time. Upon returning I've picked up on something noteworthy- there's a lot of illegal contract offers around here, and I mean a LOT. I've skipped to and from a fair handful of stations today and honestly, there's at LEAST as many illegal opportunities as there are legitimate. It's not like there are a lot of anarchy factions either, only a couple in my local area. The majority of those offering these types of missions are corporate, seemingly legitimate groups with dark underbellies of criminal members looking for transport, off-the-books assasinations, and hidden contraband smuggling. Maybe I was looking at the Federation with rose tinted glasses when I started playing, but coming back now I wonder when it got so sinister.
