Imperial Megaships

Why are Imperial megaships so "utilitarian"? Prelude To Victory, the Imp megaship at the CG, should be called "Prelude To Ugly". Did the Empire buy all their megaships from the Federation?

Because FDev got increasingly lazy with the additions that popped up following Horizons. Hopefully they chisel it all into shape soon. Even the stations should be different externally.

think they're often referred to as Capital ships too. They're all factioned as far as my experience tells me. But I haven't seen them all yet
Here's a good example that makes me think they are factioned. At the headquarters of the Empire, there's a repair stn for 2 imperial capital ships (obviously dmg'd by Thargoids) . I've never seen imperial capital ships in any other factions turf just yet. I'm not ruling out that another faction can't buy one. I just haven't seen it yet. I did just watch a video from a Cmdr who responded to the a distress signal in the Pleiades and found an Imperial cap ship under attack by Goids and it was definitely Imperial factioned.

Ah, yeah i don't call them megaships.

You'd think something called a mega ship WOULD be powerful... at least as powerful as spec ops =p

My tiny submarine would make quick work of this.

Though to the topic, the Empire's version should look more like this:

Aren't all megaships factionless? I.e there is no "federal" or "imperial" megaship?
There are factions and then there are superpowers (which I know you know). In this CG, it's clear that "Prelude To Victory" is an Imperial support ship. AFAIK it wasn't even in the system before the CG began. Its role reminds me of a submarine tender IRL, and the Russian tenders look different than American tenders. 🤷

ps - part of the problem is that ships are treated like stations. This megaship offers faction-based missions, but it really shouldn't IMO.

pps - why are superpowers even using generic megaships? They should have their own fleet carriers, which are much better at supporting remote operations than a megaship. Ironic that private citizens have better hardware than the mighty superpowers.

I've landed on it three times and I still have no idea what it looks like cos it's always been in the dark. 🤷‍♂️

Guess I could switch on my NV but... y'know.

I'd be more inclined to think that the Majestics will be for the press releases with well dressed Imperial citizens in beautiful ships 30ly from the actual battle, whilst the oiks who are actually fighting the battle get the garbage scow.

I think the Flight Operations megaships are actually bigger than the Fleet Carriers.

Fewer pads, so fewer simultaneous ships on the pad, but lore wise, I think they're larger, and are supposed to have internals closer to station-scale, much larger cargo and ship storage (or CARBO BAYs according to one of the decals on the ship itself), have proper rotating habitation areas with pseudo-gravity so would be much more comfortable to inhabit for large numbers of people, etc.

They'd likely replace those solar panels with slaves below deck though.

In defense of FD's art, design & modelling teams and from a purely practical game asset point of view the Imperial style with all its rounded forms and smooth curving surfaces flowing into each other doesn't lend itself easily to the kit-bashing method used for mega-ships, generation ships and stations. The Imperial look is a lot harder to throw together quickly from a library of parts as they ideally all need to be blended together and smoothed out..

I'm not saying that excuses FD from never having designed any Imperial-looking megaships before now though.

Look at the art direction they convey on Galnet when referencing Imperial topics. You sometimes see beautiful settlements and palaces etc. I wish Fdev worked hard in giving the Feds the Blade Runner industrial city look and the Imperials the elegant fantasy realm look. Lol. At minimum the stations should be different in key Imperial regions. Obviously powers shift with the dynamic, so I mean key regions only, such as the capitals and primary systems. It would make for excellent incentives to visit them.
