Newcomer / Intro Imperial rank - does it have to be boring?

Is that as awesome and time consuming as it sounds?
Yes, and yes.

It'd be great if they somehow compensated with money, the amount you drive. The drive could be "confirming" terrain, or something, and you could cash that in. Sorta like terrain exploring/verifying.
Yeah, I'm afraid the only reward for driving is the awesome experience itself. That and bragging rights from the "total SRV distance travelled" number (oh, and the "planetary circumnavigation" EDSM achievement badge you can earn).

To answer the OP. No, it doesn't have to be boring. Ranking with the Empire is simply ... doing any mission you want for an Empire affiliated faction. So just do that, so the things you find fun in the game, take the REP reward unless you really want one of the others, and watch out for promotion missions (the more Imperial factions the more chance of seeing one).

Grinding is for the birds. Don't listen to streamers or posters who tell you to do it.

Since you mentioned the word boring... you won't escape boredom if you find
  • being invulnerable to pirates while hauling huge amounts of cargo
a convincing argument. That's a contradiction.
True. There is no game play challenge here. Evading interdiction is difficult in the cumbersome Cuter - even harder than evading interdiction in a Type 9. So you submit to it. Then you either just ignore the pirate and tank the hits on your shields while wrestling the ship to point toward the station and hit boost once then charge FSD and resume course (because no pirate can mass lock you),

or,

use boost and the reverski manoeuvre to keep your target inside 3km and 4.8km range (4.8km being the longest useful range a long range engineered gimbled weapon can hit anything) and steadily chip away at them with your modest less than 100 DPS (that's long range engineering and class 7 power distributors for you) until they pop.

The exception to the above is if you are skilled at using long range engineered rail guns with FA off and can hit tiny targets at range with this build. I can't do it. This guy can. Not convinced this is entertaining game play either, but like everything else with the Cutter, it is effective.

OP didn't sound like they like grinding 🤷‍♀️

The problem is, after playing this game for years, you already know, that all the missions are just that - a mission with no impact on any story or game behaviour... Sure, if you do a lot of missions, you can change the dynamics of factions in the system etc... But I was kinda hoping, when I started playing the Elite, that it would somehow be more like X3, where there is a story and your actions actually do make some difference... Instead, you do a mission in ED and nothing changes... You get rep and inf for the faction, but that's it...

So that is why I decided to grind for the rank. Just find the quickest way and be done with it as fast as possible. Now it is not as boring, as Robigo because in the Ngalinn system, there are sometimes interdictions and the promotion missions are often a masacre missions, so I can enjoy some pew-pew action...

My heart is an explorers heart... I feel best out in the void, exploring planets... If there was a story, I guess I would feel more immersed in the bubble gameplay...

Eh, you went to the grind spot and found grinding boring. I'm shocked.

Just go somewhere deep into imperial space and do jobs for them. Take which ever ones you think you might enjoy and let them take you wherever you feel like. If you must be efficient focus on courier and small cargo deliveries, just don't stack too many at a time because you will spend more time evading interdiction than making progress.

Exactly! I was shocked myself! So much in fact, that I had to rant about it here... :)

Thanks for the tip, now that I am doing exactly what you said, it is no longer that much boring... I'm stacking 20 missions, enjoying the interdictions in fact and doing all donations I can to speed up the process...

Fair point...

But on the other hand, I do enjoy the feeling of total dominance against NPCs.

In the event of feeling like I need some action, I will engage in some of the rare PvP interdictions... One happened to me just recently, but I boosted away, as I still had over 500M of unsold data (out of 3B I had originally)... He attempted to interdict me twice, I managed to escape on both occasions. We then had a nice and friendly chat about it and he even felt genuinely sorry for attacking an explorer with a lot of data... :)

So I went to do these courier jobs in Ngalinn and I am already Squire rank and I have another promotion mission waiting for me... This is not as bad a I thought it would be... Thanks! :)

Courier Jobs are ok for the first 8 ranks or so.
Then they get slower and slower to progress

Better still, do the pirate massacre missions. There are five empire factions offering them there (Ngalinn) so you can make 500 mil per trip while you rank up. All you need is a Vulture.

Yep, this.
Or any other higher paying/rep type of mission.
Including the only Imperial faction in Robigo.

This too...

My Epic alt is getting Fed rep by stacking scout and interceptor missions in Sosong, still far from unlocking the Vette but working on it

So, if I take a pirate masacre mission, where I need to kill like 90 pirates, and there are the same symbols for Rep (let's say 5 bars out of 5), to complete this mission, it will take a couple of hours and then, when I turn the mission in, do I only get 5 bars of the reputation, or are these bars only an indication of some sort of multiplier? Or how does it work?

Because if I take 20 courier or data transfer missions, I will get 20x 2 bars, which is 40 bars... I just don't understand how the Reputation works...

Each + sign is a measure of the amount of reputation you will receive. The amount of percentage change you see in the right-hand panel reduces "per +" as you progress. So a "++" courier mission is worth over 3% at the lower ranks but maybe only a fraction of a % at the higher ranks.

So I agree - 20 "++" missions is worth a darn sight more than one "+++++" mission.

I don't know if you stack massacre pirate missions that each kill counts for all missions - I don't think it does {it doesn't in the noob-zone} but I'll defer to anyone that knows definitively.

Thats what I suspected...

If you take one pirate massacre mission per faction one kill counts against all the missions. So of it takes 2 hours to get say 55 kills you would get 5 X 5 rep out of it assuming 5 federal factions - if that much rep was available from every faction (unlikely).
It's still a slow way to get rep compared to stacked data courier missions. Good for credits, though.

Cool, I understand that wasn't in a Cutter though, right? Or wait... how exactly did you escape, by winning the interdiction mini game or by submit and high wake?
The first interdiction, I didnt even notice it was a player, until I lost the mini game... I then noticed the hollow marker on my radar, so I immediately boosted away and he just couldnt keep up... I was in my PvE Python, I knew I would lose... My mistake was, that I just low waked, so he tried to interdict me again.... This time I submitted and boosted away again, takin advantage of his cool down time being much longer... I landed at the station, immediately sent him a friend request...

He was like "Come and fight me!"
I was like "Why, I know you will win and I still have over 500M of unsold data..."
And he said "Im sorry, I didnt know that, why dont you play in solo?"
And then we laughed about it...

I dont play in solo... :)

(well, I do now, but only because the pads are constantly occupied by someone, who is going through the mission list, sitting there for 15 minutes and you just cant land...)

So I have just been promoted to Baron... And I have 100% rep, so I will take another promotion mission tomorrow... It is going quite well and it is definitely quite fun... :)
