Imperial Slaves unnecessary? Imagine production in 3000 CE... What say ye cruel childeren of the corn.

That pretty much sums up any economy. We have designed ours in such a way to use debt and interest as a trap - once they lure you in, you spend the rest of your life working to get out. Just ask the banks, the credit card companies, the student-lenders....

"From feudal serf to spender
This wonderful world of purchase power"

I really appreciate this forum for discussion while I work on a co-authored spec fiction screenplay and short story setup so forgive my “fine tooth comb” issues absurdly applied to a Vehicle based video game.
Futurists are always speculators. The fall of the Roman Empire, the fall of the Berlin Wall- inevitable? Maybe not.

You might appreciate this post from Michael Brookes, the former Executive Producer of Elite: Dangerous, who help define much of the modern Elite lore:

Honestly, I wouldn't expect the "oh but the federation has rampant poverty" argument to hold up if our mission payouts represent the game's economy in any meaningful way.

It takes what, 5 minutes to earn back the purchase price of a sidewinder? With a RoI like that, basically any joe blow with two hands and functioning eyes/ears should be able to take out a loan for a sidewinder, zero down, no interest for the first 90 days, no questions asked. Bad credit, no credit, no problem. You'll have it paid off in 5 minutes and then you'll be rolling in cash. Approval will be a cakewalk because for the bank, handing out a loan for such a high RoI piece of hardware is the safest investment they can possibly make.

When it's that easy for any bum off the street to take out a loan for a sidewinder and make their fortune, there's basically no reason for poverty as we know it to exist in the Federation.

Its a case of what a state/society considers valuable. You need to build and invent machines, people are born for free. Morality is variable, and some people like the power. Utopian mentality isn't universal.

Edited for fat thumb typo's
