News Implementation of a dedicated mission server

I want to echo what most other people are saying here; people board flip because they can't find the mission types they want. It's incredibly frustrating to want to support a faction, and they're offering 2 donation missions, or even no missions at all. Either increase the quantity, or let us pick an activity and generate missions based on that. Don't just kill off the answer we found to the problem.

FDdev - please reconsider.

I'll miss board flipping. It's the most exciting part of the game. Plus, as part of the special 2.8% I feel part of the, you know, Elite.

Sounds good all 'round. Having a simple, consistent mission system sounds both more fair (in-game) and maintainable / extendable (outside the game).

Flipping was a horrible mechanic, glad it's being gotten rid of. It'd be really nice if there could be new systems for finding the kinds of mission you want (e.g. Galnet could be used for systems looking for traders/fighters/passenger craft etc.)

everyone is celebrating until they realized this change wasn't for stability.. but to make the grind EVEN LONGER......

think about it, no board flipping, no more mission stacking.. if the missions you want empty out, you will be waiting until it refreshes because board hopping won't force it.. so now missions as a whole will be non-viable for anything but BGS.. unless you like waiting.

I am now convinced they are trying to drive people away from this game so they can focus on new and more profitable ones.

A welcome change for sure Frontier, but why not ditch peer to peer networking and put ED on a proper dedicated server the game's connectivity and stability would benefit so much as a result and with all those lep's and cosmetic sales I'm sure you could afford it.

This is overall a good change, but I hope it carries with it some significant tweaks that will increase the variety of missions and the value of completing missions that will be harder to ignore. I would prefer not to be stuck choosing between 6,000 ton wing missions for 3 million credits and mining missions.

TIME TO ADD A MISSION FILTER THEN?

Will this enable you to add a Mission Filter then?

At the moment we just have the Reward Filter (which is semi-useful) but I think the boards really need to have a Mission Filter as well.
What I mean by this is a filter at the top where you can select the Type of Mission that you want to see: Delivery, Source & Return, Massacre, Mining, etc.
They are all grouped into various Icons, so surely they can be filtered too? I spend half my time scrolling through Mission Boards trying to find what I want.

Am I mad, or is that a totally fantastic idea?!? [woah]

Greetings Commanders,

In the next chapter of Beyond (3.3), we will be implementing and migrating mission data to a new separate server. While this mainly affects the back-end of the game, you will see some changes to missions in-game.

As it currently stands, missions are on a shared server with other elements of the game. This has the risk of problems with missions causing outages and stability issues for the rest of the game if there are technical hiccups.

So, what benefits will we see by moving missions to their own separate server?

  • Any issue (generated by missions) which can cause a server outage or stability problems will no longer result in players disconnecting. Instead the missions will be unavailable for a period of time.
  • If such issues do occur, the previous servers will be able to act as a back-up, offering better opportunities to recover game content as quickly as possible.
  • We may see a slight decrease in mission board loading times.
  • Missions will now be consistent across game modes (Solo/Open/Private Group).
It's also worth noting that, as a result of a dedicated 'mission server', there will be a removal/significant reduction of the method of refreshing mission boards by logging in and out of the game ("board flipping"). While we understand that this is a practice utilised by some* players, this was never the intended use of the mission system.

Even though there is a small number of players doing this, we will increase the credit payout of missions (by 10%) across the board so all players using the mission boards as intended will see a net profit. As a result of this, some mission reward choices will see boosted influence, reputation and rank gains. As always when it comes to missions, we will continually review and balance them where needed.

Ultimately, this is a healthy step for our overall servers and game experience.

If you have any questions or would like to share your feedback with us, please post below!

*we found that only 2.8% of daily online players were using the mission system in this way.

You used the word "hope".. a word that FDev will go out of their way to crush.

Well, any improvement to missions it to be welcomed but I have to say that usually, such 'improvements' don't work as well as intended.

Take for example the material brokers: Re-balance exchange rates anyone?

I will echo what others say.. increasing the payout isnt the carrot you should be using here to give to people for stopping board flipping.. increasing the type and variety and quantities of missions are what you need to be working on.

Greetings Commanders,

If missions are to be changed, how about an indicator as to whether or not a large landing pad is available?

Haven't done a mission with my Conda for months because missions don't often cater for large ships.

While materials are random, it was only way (refresh of mission board) to get them.

Implement some minigame to find/scan for materials/USS in the universe instead of randomize().
In these days, Elite is like hazard game, we are just waiting for the number.

I grinded for 2 Vettes and Cutter without later nerfed missions and board flipping. I think not me the only one. But yeah, surely will lots on the other side. Maybe better payments will help to them, and there is always some way to make things easier. Many player will find that way(s).

This. Or a way to influnece what type of missions you are getting. Maybe depending on ship type? Or the ability to request additional missions from ission givers? I'd rather have 10% less payout and be able to refresh missions instead of having to wait a fixed amount of time for a refresh in case the board is crappy.

So, I forsee:

  • Fewer missions available to take because one cannot refresh and get a new roll of the dice. aka more grind.

  • Fewer legal missions to run due to plethora of extra-legal missions
and

  • More instances of solo missions clogging up the board when in wings.
  • More instances of wing missions clogging up the board when solo.
    • (yeah, happens both ways)

Please consider:
  • move wing missions to new board like passenger missions
  • move illegal missions to ‘black market’ or create a new board to hold extra-legal activity (smuggling, black market, piracy, wanted passengers, etc) and make access to that section dependent on reputation with the seedier factions.
    • Note: black markets and extra-legal activities should not be shut down by current player fines or bounties...
    • Perhaps it just costs more through the pirate-bay... unless the player has a really good rep with one of the seedier factions.
  • Add a refresh button to the boards that rolls the dice again. Allow it to be used once per cycle for the board, or make it per faction and make the # of available rerolls tied to rep with that faction.

Ultimately, this kills the unwanted server/board flopping for missions... and increases the amount of time spent staring at lackluster missions that arent wanted, of are denied access for one reason or another.

I do hope that it helps with stability as mentioned.

I do hope gameplay isn’t strangled more as a side-effect of this long needed change.
