News Important Community Update

Ok,

I'm heading home now but I'll check in over the weekend periodically. I'll be heading out to Fantasticon tomorrow so if you're there, feel free to pop over and say hi.

Thanks again to everyone who has been passionate enough to jump onto the thread and discuss, regardless of opinion. We're looking forward to showing you the rest of the Chapter Four update soon.

Many thanks,

Thanks for the update.

I'm a P.Beta backer, with LEP, and have been totally happy to see the "Beyond" additions rolled out as free updates.

Delighted to year you're in full production mode for Elite: Dangerous: More: Semicolons. :)

It's great that some things were switched around to enhance other gameplay. This is not really bad news. Some planets won't get the updates but the rest are, mining and exploration will have some added gameplay. After the Beyond series we might see a lot speculated ideas get thrown into the game. Walking around? Atmo landings? Animals and plants?
Been playing for measly 1800 hours and I've been happy so far with the game. Bought it right after horizons was released and loved it since. Despite its flaws, I love it still. NMS is cool, too...but it feels more like a cartoon in a way. There is another game I won't speak of but that game is living off of backers buying into the game with a lot more money....with still very, very little content in comparison.
I look forward to keep on playing the game....it relaxes me after a stressful day.

Well said!

Sadly PowerPlay is about the only area in Elite that had the potiential to create a Lore story driven by player action. As in an actually driven by player actions not the illusion of being driven by player action.

If you ever have time to bother ready a bit of the lore created around PowerPlay (which is in total contrast with the Lore of Elite) you would see the potential.

In fact PowerPlay is the only area in Elite that have all the "Explore, Trade combat" built into it. To see it neglected is so sad. I am willing to bet that no other player base spend so much time and energy in Elite as PowerPlayers, literally for the past 2 months a lot of us has spent over 10 hours daily between planning, analyisng data (which we understand apparetnly more than FDev ever will) and planning strategies, building diplomatic ties and alliances, fighting some incredible wars... And in the end, we are neglected. We lost about half our player base just because they feel there is no point in playing anymore... For me PowerPlay is Elite. and I see myself like almost a lot of our community just leaving this game... sad.

Hear hear! *applauds*

Frontier Developers,

I've worked in the Computer Software / Hardware Industry for my entire professional life. My current employer utilizes Zero Based Budgeting, commonly known as ZBB (many industries use this method, and you may too). Anything below ZBB gets cut. Having spent my entire professional life in the Product Life Cycle of software & hardware projects, we've have lists of items we want to add to a project, and these are prioritized, as I am sure yours are.

One thing that would help communications with your player base is to list the major enhancements you want to add, and share that data with your base (us). Then, (and I think it's absolutely wonderful that you do this) let us comment as usual on what we think is important. Take that data along with your PLC vision and decide where the ZBB is. This would help you (and us) know what is likely to be cut, and what is almost guaranteed to be included. Then share that with us!

I realize this may reduce the "Surprise Effect" you like to give us, but seriously, we don't need surprises (small ones, yes. Major ones, like Fleet Carriers and Guilds, no)! Most of us are Grown Up Children and prefer to know what's coming, rather than waiting for Christmas Morning (some may prefer the surprises, and I admit it IS fun).

If I had the time and inclination I could create your List of Enhancements to share here, based on previous information, to put everything in a list. However, I'd rather play in BSG, RES and Explore or Mine.

My Priorities:
1: Squadrons (and everything that goes with Guilds; banks, Fleet Carriers, etc.). Oh well.
2: Mining Updates! I truly hope you will keep all the enhancements you stated, and include a lot of enhancements requested by fellow miners!
3: Exploration! "It's their turn!"
That's it for my priorities. I would like to see C&P drop the fines from docking irregularities, but that's a different story!

I really love this game. I had been looking for something like this since Star Fox and Descent. I may complain from time to time, but this game is my addiction.

Thank you for allowing me to contribute input into the game! This is absolutely fantastic!
Fly Safe!
Happy Daze

thats not any thing they can control Apple has refused to update there opengl version and ditched Vulkan and Metal is mess just boot in to windows its not hard

Don't let them tell you Apple was to blame. FDev made an intentional decision to change rendering code (probably to SM5) to support xBox and PS4, and this meant either branching off the MacOS version, or abandon it. They abandoned it. They could have made it work with wrappers or other solutions - remember OpenGL was dropped by Windows long ago - but FDev didn't want to support it going forward. Also remember they dropped the iPad Elite app in the first year! Don't blame Apple.

OT: zero credibility earned in this news and coming as a Friday night bombshell. This is how public companies usually release bad news to the street to use the weekend time to let things cool down. FDev should have at least shown examples of the great stuff still coming in Q4.

You really have been living in a bubble.

In terms of the game I do each day yes. Occasionally going out of it for some Exploration or Guardian Material farming.

Otherwise I'm staying inside of it, playing the BGS in my region and enjoying it with many others of my Wing.

You however don't seem to do so. Which is a pity but can't be helped.

Enjoy playing NMS, we'll do the same with Elite.

Well, a mixed message indeed.

Seems like the dev team tried to fit more in than they could achieve.

One bit of advice Zac, use the word priorotized correctly. You're saying stuff has been prioritized so it won't be making it in. Its kind of backwards. Use repriorotized.

Shame about fleet carriers, those could have been a big boon to DW2, as well as the ice planets.

So, my personal takeaway from this is:

Q4 still biggest update, but not as big as initially hoped.
Freebies in store for LEP owners but no paid for gameplay content
Paid for gameplay content will come in the future instead
FD reaffirms over 100 people working on ED (presumably you slipped that in there to provide a quote for when numpties start talking about there only being 4 people working on ED - a waste of breath, people will believe what they want to believe, or they will say its rubbish progress for so many people)
Basically you had bad news to deliver, so tried to show FD are still very much committed to ED and there are still long term plans for the game - again, to tell the detractors this is not the end of development for the game.

And considering your words, i'm going to hazard a guess that atmoshperic worlds are the big feature you're not ready to talk about. ;)

Why would they get legs or atmospheric in next update when they can't get what they said would be in the qtr 4 one???

This is my reddit post

I'm disappointed but not surprised because it's my fault I bought before the launch, I got them to make money making promises as old politicians, I had patience when the products are bad, badly finished. I chose to believe when reality showed the opposite side. "It'll be great next time and blah, blah, blah" always next time, and next and next time. Then when the company comes to the public saying that they will not deliver what they promised the reason is incompetence. It's my fault, but it's my decision to continue to support lies and incompetence. For me to have some hope of changing the market I screwed up I need to change my behavior, be conservative with my money, choose to buy good games from responsible companies that deliver what they promise, in time, without excuses.

Hey Rubbernuke,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I know you're keen to hear about the Powerplay details.

The focused feedback thread was always meant to be exploring content and measure on certain hot topic questions. It was never confirmed as a Q4 update, although I can understand why you're asking if it will make it in. Sadly for all the reasons being discussed in the thread above, this also isn't an area that will make it into the Chapter Four update.

I know your history as a mega Powerplay dude of awesomeness, but I think it best to be as open as possible. I hope you understand.

Been playing PP on and off since the first weeks of its implementation. Personally for me, it has been the only thing keeping me playing Elite. In its current iteration though (as in its past iteration before the last change almost two years ago), it is completely borked. Rampant 5C and turret boaters in Solo/PG sitting in CZ's basically auto winning systems for their power are two examples out of many examples of why it is completely borked.

Anyways, seeing the suggested changes brought forward by Sandro earlier this year, and the overwhelming support for Open Only PP brought back some hope for me that we could finally see some positive changes that could bring back PP from the brink of death. Then we come to today, where we get confirmation that PP has again been put on the backburner, another "We'll visit this again soon." It is just so frustrating seeing this happen yet again.

So here is my question. The original focused feedback on PP (which was posted in May) contained several topics that many people agreed with (change to preparation, withdrawing from systems, etc.), while a couple topics (BGS, Open Only PP) had some contention with it. Why is it that PP cannot get at least some of the more agreed changes, and bug fixes (such as turret boating) by the Chapter 4 update? With an assumed release date in November or December for Chapter 4, you guys would of had 6-7 months (going from when the first focused feedback was posted) to give us something, even if it was some partial changes.

OpenGL is still in Windows, and supported in its current version of 4.6, so not sure what this is supposed to mean.

Err. No. It's supported by the video chip manufacturers with the drivers they provide. What it's supposed to mean is that blaming the change for direct OpenGL support by the OS was lame. Reason for not supporting MacOS going forward is because FDev don't want to pay the price to do this.

Not trying to start anything.

I so the news on you tube and massive amount of people (including myself) are really negative. "At least" some content was being put into the game. But even this is scrapped....

Thanks for the update, Zac - I'm sure it wasn't easy standing in the line of fire for as long as you did.

So, some disappointing news, namely the features that have been cut for Q4. Big features.

I can only think of two reasons; either they weren't going to be able to get them done in time, or they had some other really good reason(s) to cut them, and put their focus elsewhere.

I'm having a hard time accepting that Frontier would do this lightly, so I'm leaning towards the latter, and that there are very good reasons involving the long-term benefit of the game.

Something else also occurred to me while reading this entire thread, and I can't stop thinking about it; the timing of the Gnosis trip, and where it's going.

It's long been assumed that the permit-locked regions are locked at least in part because new things are being developed in those regions. I suppose an advantage would be that they can see how the live environment is affected without directly affecting it, if that makes sense. Now, the Gnosis is going to be traveling to one of these regions, and is going to be there for the month of September. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the last month of Q3.

I understand that this might be a stretch, especially in light of the OP of this thread, but what if the people going with the Gnosis are going to find that they will be, in essence, able to beta test a number of things from the Q4 update. Personally, I think this would be a brilliant move on Frontier's part, assuming things go smoothly. Those with a DSS might find that it has more functionality, allowing testing of the probes, people might find that the Gnosis (or maybe an as yet unknown station) has the new Mining equipment, and so on. It is one possible explanation for why Frontier isn't ready to talk about Q4 features, including the new ones mentioned in the OP, for an update that is *around the corner.* Give those Commanders a taste of what is to come, and get their feedback before it actually goes live, so that they can make any necessary fixes or changes in advance, rather than in arrears. It could also do wonders for generating excitement about the final update of Beyond.

This would also coincide with Ed's *sooner than you think* statement (unless that has already come to pass, not sure on that).

I have no idea how Frontier could pull this off without it leaking into the rest of the live environment, but I guess we'll find out this week. It seems like a long-shot at best, in any case.

Edit: I forgot to mention something else that I've been thinking about after reading Zac's post. I think the game has some serious business changes coming in 2019, that could include a revamped and much deeper Mission system, and moving to a client-server model as opposed to P2P. Just a feeling based on some things that Zac said, nothing more at this time.

Riôt
