I believe Apple were part of the Vulkan consortium, but dropped out and then went down the Metal route.Even CarrierAdminOS supports DirectX. If FDev ever switch to the Vulkan API, then we could get macOS support again.
For anyone coming to this as of May 2020, Elite Dangerous works very well via Geforce Now from a MacBook or anything else!
