In-game advertising - would it bother you?

It's a good idea, but not with real life brands. Instead, I'd like to see FDev allocate resources to create adverts from within the game. Like docking at a station and seeing a sexy Core Dynamics gold minted corvette commercial display on the advertising screens, which then finishes off with "Why be like everyone else? Join the 1% today!" as the corvette flies off into some heavenly clouds. Add some player interaction on those adverts so they can click an in-game link to their Frontier Store to buy the skin.

Adverts? Check
Monetization? Check
Win-Win? Check

Would be fun to see some Volkswagen car commercials from 1000 years ago while I am flying a 400 ton spaceship that flies many times faster than light. Yes for commercials that are fit to the game lore and environment, no to real life products that we don't need in space 3033.

Would something like this be a way of bringing money into the game to fund development? Would it be a step too far and immersion-breaking? Are there enough players that such companies would even be interested?

I would welcome real ads on all those "billboards" already in the game. Seeing the same six fake ads in every station across the galaxy is immersion-breaking. I think Frontier could stipulate that advertisers modify their own billboards to be 34th Century appropriate - Coca-Cola in a high-tech flask, for example. I'd also expect lots of restaurants in these stations, since they remind me of service stations alongside the highway. Maybe McDonalds in Federal stations and Burger King in Imperial stations? Of course the Alliance would have Chipotle, LOL [haha]

You all see what I did there with Burger King, yes? Hahahaha!!!

Excuse us while we interrupt your gameplay to show you this fullscreen ad for 15 secs.

No thanks I've already payed for the game.

Lol

Imagine pulling in to a McDonald's endorsed outpost...

It would be quite funny, seeing those golden arches.

But it would only be complete if the space dust was replaced with burger boxes, fries and happy meal toys floating about.

And whenever you brought something from the commodities market, the wrong stuff got loaded on your ship, but of course, you don't realise until you stop to check later on.

Only if they had real ingame products....Audi SRV or something.
Or a Nike or Adidas Remlok suit.

BTW,
I personally think the 'Horizon content' warning is way more intrusive and immersion braking.
Only have this with my second account which does not have Horizons.

I have no issue with it at all, despite being very libertarian. A business needs to advertise its products if it is to succeed. If that is done in a discreet way (such as roadside billboards, or odd pages in a newspaper etc), that would be fine. I would have no issue with even TV adverts playing on billboards in stations, in fact I think it would add to the atmosphere. Unsolicited comms messages or in game mails are an absolute no-no though.

It depends on the immersion factor.
For them to be pass for me they would have to fit in perfectly with the lore and have a new look , and be in places that would make logical sense

EDIT : No , I changed my mind , its not something that would end well.
It would lead down a path that would destroy integrety.

Back when I used to play Sims 3, there were occasions when they would introduce real-life products into the game, such as a type of clothing or a specific car. When I was flying into a station recently, I thought that maybe some of the advertising boards could be used to generate some revenue for the game.

Personally, I wouldn't want anything that would greatly break immersion, but surely it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that some companies from the 21st century survived?

So for example, one of the advertising boards showing the Coca-Cola or Pepsi logo (maybe each of these only show up in Empire or Federation stations) amongst the Remlock adverts.

Would something like this be a way of bringing money into the game to fund development? Would it be a step too far and immersion-breaking? Are there enough players that such companies would even be interested?

Defintely wouldn't want to see actuall 2017 products being advertised, would like to see actual companies in game , would give it a bit more life to see futuristic versions of Coke-Cola, Audi, Lockheed etc. would even be happy with fictional brands at certain stations. For some strange reason the only form of advertisement in the future is provided by a couple of ship manufactures.

Even the Python was originally designed by Whatt and Pritney (A blatant Pratt & Whitney rip off) These starports should be bristling with advertisements from various organisations.

Exactly, I am guessing those who say it would be immersion breaking haven't spent much time in reality recently. On the contrary it would create a more immersive, more realistic universe, as it is, it is rather....dry. I want to see the crazy future Chinese style advertising as seen in Firefly, bring some color and CRAZY to the universe. Go, go advertising, even if it doesn't bring revenue, just get permission from Coke to use their logo free, I'm sure they'd let you, bit of free advertising for them. Just don't stick it on any stations called the Blue Oyster station or such, to avoid possible misunderstandings. ;)

I'd be okay with certain sponsorships. It's not completely implausible that certain brands might still exist in the distant future. A screen for Porsche Design ships? Rolls Royce engines? Coke? With some clever slogan that makes sense in the future?

That's fine.

I think it unlikely any more than one or two companies would still be in business and trading under the same name 1300 odd years from now,
Apparently the Kongō Gumi construcion company of Japan is still going after 1500 years so it's not outside the realms of possibility.

I could wear one or two, 'Coke' is probably a good contender for being around in some form or another forever. KFC, slaughtering chickens(or the nearest approved substitute) by the gazillion to satisfy a quintillion hungry human beings. Any more and it is immersion breaking but meh it wouldn't stop me playing.

Why would anyone in their right mind want any of that?

Ain't nobody got time for that.

Seriously, in recent months, I've noticed TONS of ads outside the major star ports, bouncing up and down, confusing me sometimes as to whether or not I'm lined up with the toaster rack or not. But if THAT'S where they put the "in-game" ads, fine. I'll ignore them there just as easily as I ignore the 3003 ads.

BTW, It's VERY annoying to try watching a show on commercial TV channels with those commercials invading the lower right or left corner of the screen. Want to advertise something? Do it during the commercial. Let me have the content, please. I find it very distracting.

Dont want it. Look what it has done to TV. No way I want it. I hardly watch any TV because of it. Dont want it ruining my enjoyment so a small handful of leeches can pocket some cash.

It would probably be all messed up like the shipnames plates and advertisers would pull out asap. Why bother?
