Have you ever travelled to Hutton Orbital to pick up your mug, only to realize that you can't actually show it off? How about travelling to Sol and picking up a cockpit accessory to commemorate your visit?
I would love to see the ability to buy cockpit accessories and/or ship skins with in game currency. Leave the current skins and stuff that can be purchased with ARX as is, but provide players a way to earn new ways to personalize their ship and show off some of the landmark events that pilots achieve during the course of their careers. I don't see this as a major change in how ED is played or the code base, as most functionality appears to be in place already. Setting up a handful of additional vendors around the galaxy that sell skins/accessories for in game currency.
This could be further expanded by adding time limited skins that you can buy with in game credits for a period of time (a few months) and once that time is expired, make it so that the skins/accessories are no longer purchasable in game but are available in the ARX store.
In-game events around major holidays or special periods of time in-universe could be leveraged as a way to add in a few extra time-limited (time limited for acquiring, once you have it, it's yours forever) skins/accessories. In other games, the first thing I do when a new event comes out is to hop into the event and play through it to gather the collectables at the end of the event. To limit the potential changes that would need to be required to the code base, these items could be gated behind a unique faction rep that is only acquired during the event itself. Once enough rep is earned, you would be able to purchase the time limited content.
Really, this idea would help bring some extra life to the ED World and gives players new content with minimal effort from the developers. It also allows FDev to continue to use the ARX store, but provides a chance that players can get the content in-game if they either have time for the new content or do not have the funds to buy from the ARX store.
