In game Keyboard, Devs?

Wouldn't it be cool if you could actually have a on screen keyboard overlay as an choosable option in VR?

Currently I have use foam stickies on various keys that are bound to certain functions, like L for lights, X for 0 thrust, J is right beneath it with no sticky for JUMP and so on. Altogether I am using 7 stickies on my KB.

I use HOTAS, mouse and keyboard atm, with most of the functions on the HOTAS of course, but some bindings would be cool if I could swing that keyboard left of me over my lap and use pointer (mouse?) to type.

Just throwing it out there as a suggestion for the devs and community.

There is one qwerty in most ships already! The problem is they placed it a bit far for some, so some stretching may be needed. In some ships, designed for thargoids apparently, you may need to get out of the seat just to use it. Its a brilliant design.

Now what about a control box instead? This can help.

This is a big want for me. I want vr, but I'm not getting it until there are interactive buttons, switches and keyboard in game.

Seems silly without them.

This would be ground breaking and fdev would be the first, if they introduced with some sort of glove. They do exist and are new.

We don't want silly vr hand held things, use the glove.

I actually find it easier to semi-touch type on the physical keyboard.

Of course you are welcome to your preference but 777Driver is correct. Oculus have provided this much requested functionality via Dash and it works as per OPs request. Dash can also provide other touch enabled solutions for the ops idea via user created 'virtual panels' which trigger the actions the op mentioned. I have a functional "PDA" in my game which also allows me to control non-essential ship systems such as, menu navigation and turning the ships lights on or off.

OP, have you considered VoiceAttack, seems to me that VA is hand down perfect for Elite and VR.

I can see that communication in the chat window would be a problem in VR, but all that effort to turn your lights on and off, when a simple voice command would work.

How do people address the in game communication issue when using VR????
(my Vive is arriving in a few days... very excite!)

No idea on Vive but on Oculus I personally use a PDA app I developed for Elite which is usable via Dash, it has a touch keyboard which is enabled when I open the comms pannel or enter the Galmap and disables when I close either. Without that app I use Dash's onscreen keyboard. Sorry no idea what the Vive / SteamVR offers in those terms you might be stuck touch typing.

Fr those using the dash as a virtual keyboard. I have played a little bit but couldn’t figure out how to use it, found the whole thing very confusing (screen dragging and launching from oculus home). Could someone point out a good tutorial on how to use it with Elite Dangerous? If there’s one available.

On another note, voice attack with a voice pack takes a lot of time and work to get it working properly, but its worth it. With hotas, dsd button box and voice attack I only need a keyboard to type system names on galaxy map or to chat (very difficult).

I saw a proof of concept using a Vive tracker attached to a Logitech mechanical keyboard that looked amazing. I hope it ends up as a product

Just saw the Logitech vr keyboard you mentioned and it looks amazing. Hope this gets into consumer hands and with an Oculus version soon. On another note I ordered the $9.99 keybodo tactile stickers, why not? Should at least help reduce typos.

You can already do this with Oculus Dash.

I am assuming you're talking about the 2.0 Dash beta?
I can't make that work with Elite, and it's really making navigation (searching for systems) annoying, as I have to blind type on physical keyboard.
The keyboard attached to the Desktop does not work in the navigation search box, at least not for me (also also screws up immersion, having to switch to Desktop and move around).

Please let me know how you do this.

Do you have any experience on how this affects performance?

I'd really love to have a VR notepad in the game to write down some stuff, i need to remember.
As i can type blind, i have no problem with using a regular keyboard in VR for text input, but it would be a nice addition.
