In SRV and my ship disappeared - trapped on planet!

Thought I would try out my SRV, landed on a planet and took off to explore in my SRV after a while thought I would go back to my ship, but no sign of it on the radar! After a while of driving around and still no sign of my ship, I attempted to summon my ship using the Lower menu but the option to do so wasn't there in the helm, just my SRV!

After a while when I looked at the local system map I could see my marker on the planet and a red ship symbol now on the nearby orbital station? So what happened? Was my ship destroyed? If so there was no warning or alert?

In the end I appeared to have no choice but to self destruct my SRV, and on restart my ship was floating above the planet atmosphere, minus the SRV?

A few questions:
1. What happened to my ship?
2. Is self distruct my only option?
3.. How do I stop this happening again, should I always put my ship into a safe orbit whenever I go off in my SRV?

Thanks
J

You should be able to dismiss, and then recall your ship from the helm/role panel (Hold square and press down on the d-pad).

I think the option to recall your ship is in the right-hand console, if not the role one beneath you. It's there somewhere anyway - your ship automatically disembarks if you go more than 2KM from it in your SRV, you need to recall it back and it'll land about 1KM from you.

From memory, if a set distance from the ship is exceeded then the ship auto-dismisses and will need to be recalled from the SRV menu.

okay glad to hear my ship wasn't destroyed and left to go into orbit as a safety feature, but went through all the SRV menus and could see no obvious way of recalling my ship! Can someone please clarify how to do this. Thanks

Hold Square, press down on the D-Pad.
Use R1 and L1 to select the SRV tab.
It should be an option in the bottom right of that screen.

Hey OP, if it makes you feel any better, the same exact thing happened to me! I landed and went on a healthy little jaunt in my SRV, but when I went back in the basic direction where I parked my ship, it was nowhere to be found! I panicked, thinking someone blew up my ship while I was gone or that perhaps I was totally lost.

Come to find out, your ship will automatically "dismiss" itself when you go a certain distance. The recall option is not where I'd expect. I was looking under "Helm" in the role panel, which is empty when in SRV. The recall ship option is buried in the SRV menu in the role panel.

So I feel your pain! YANA :D

Yes exactly this! Oh well, live and learn. Thanks everyone for all your responses, and agree, not in the obvious place, but now know for next time!

It was probably destroyed on the ground, either by an NPC or a human player. This is why you always dismiss your ship after dusting off your SRV. If you just leave your ship sitting there, on the ground, unprotected, someone can fly right up and destroy it. When you return, all you find is a smoking hole in the ground (not really, the game does not provide a smoking hole in the ground, but that would be cool, huh!?). Always, always dismiss the ship. o7

I hot keyed my Dismiss/recall ship command to "Circle + Down Button" when in your SRV its currently not in use, makes it easy especially when you are running from baddies and you need a quick recall and don't have time to stop and look :)

Well, seems like this question has been answered. But quick word of advice. Be very wary of recalling your ship if you're inside some huge hole or next to a massive cliff or in a canyon. Ships have been known in the past to blindly careen into obstacles and then explode right in front of you. Then you'll sit there, watching your only hope of escape scatter across the ground in wreckage. And then you will be truly stranded.

No joke this happened to someone on here quite some time ago. He made a thread about his adventures stranded on some planet in the Running Man Sector. He named the planet Wilson and iirc the Devs put in a tourist beacon memorializing this CommanderJs adventures and inevitable death. They even renamed the planet from its base designation to "Wilson".
