Inconsistent experience is killing the game for me.

Hmm, was thinking about it some more and I recently did have an oddity during some missions. I'd stacked some missions and had a bear of a time finding one of the targets. First 2 were found easily and dispatched, the 3rd required I jump out of the system and come back, then I found him. He also didn't want to die. Don't remember what the ranks were, just that the stacked missions can behave a little odd from time to time..

To OP was that a wing mission? Meaning if you mistakenly take wing mission, then those NPC's tend to be bad news. I have been badly beaten with my mostly g5 Cutter when I tried those solo....Only prudent waking out when shields were gone prevented buy out screens.

Normal kill missions no problem, though last time I did those was some time ago, nowadays I mostly freelance NPC bounty hunting. Meaning lurking in some haz res and killing everyone with wanted status.

@Kelster87 Sometimes that happens to me too, if I have more than one kill mission in one system, it may happen that one or more targets appear only after going out and back in of the system. Some targets will appear if you just low wake, as long as they're in supercruise and are aggresive towards you. Massacre missions can be the worst though, before one of the more recent patches you would find 2 or 3 targets in supercruise, then they would disappear and the mission tag would break on places like RESs.
@TiberiusDuval I'm sure it wasn't a wing mission, simply because it was recommended for a Competent pilot. Never ever seen a wing mission that's not Elite. On top of that, I'm always expecting heavy support on the target's side since these are wetwork missions. Moreover, one target was enough to complete the mission.

@TiberiusDuval Also I'd recommend trying out CZs as they are right now, there's a lot of variance and isn't as hectic as a lot of people seem to think. Used to be a nightmare for me that's for sure lol. At some point either I got better or it got easier but it's a blast. Assassination and spec ops are also a big step up from bounty hunting imo, there's a huge thrill on hunting a single target on a crowd of system security ships.

I have bad experiences on CZ's. On rez sites if you do not have any cargo, well after dealing with your targets you can lay low, replenish shields and ammo, no body will bother you.

Here's an update on the original post, that is going to make me look like more of an @$$ but I am responsible for what I said so:
Just found an elite wetwork mission proportional in difficulty to the mission i was talking about earlier. It's a heavily armored Vette with a caravan of 4 or 5 large ships with some SLFs and instant security response soon as I strike the Vette. Not even a wing mission.
I had never seen one like this but at least it makes sense now. I'm still not sure about the FDL's health but I won't complain about that again, i don't really care if the stats on the ships are a bit pumped as long as there is consistency.

I can't get past the part where I would just be grateful for a surprise with respects to NPC's behavior and accouterments. With that said and all snark aside, it sounds like a bug and shouldn't fall into the category of a game balance complaint. How often are players running into hiccups like this?

They should totally bring this bug back, still one of the most awesome things I've ever seen in the game.

Now that's what I call an unpredictable npc experience.

NPC combat rank dictates how the AI flies and the likelihood it's ship will be Engineered. It's not a hard 'difficulty' gauge and I don't think it was ever intended to be.

Omg lol
I wouldn't even be mad at that 🤣

WOW that sounds serious...

I'll figure it out :D

Ofc not. But the gap was too wide, didn't make sense. I did however manage to make sense out of it later, see my previous response in this thread.

I believe npc ships have engineering access so that's my guess. If the ship just had different stats to others in its class, that has to be a bug.

Wetwork and "kill pirate..." mission targets do indeed have engineered ships. CZs and Compromised Nav Beacons are full of engineered npc ships. Pirate activity emissions with high threat levls, etc. I've run into a few npc ships with RIDICULOUS engineering. Add to that the fact they regen 100% of their hull every time you have to run and come back, and itcan be very frustrating. Many CMDRs aren't aware of how tough some NPC ships can get (epescially wing encounters) because they never get out of Mostly Harmless rank. By the time you get to Expert rank it's like playing an entirely different game. Enemy npcs are based on what ship you're using, the rank of the mission, and your combat rank.

You're missing the point. I've been at dangerous for about a month now I'm at 68% towards deadly. I'm at Elite trader and Exploration. Been doing nothing but combat recently. It's not about it being too hard. It's what seemed at the moment like a really glaring inconsistency in how missions are given. Sure, I am missing some content because I haven't seen engineered ships or maybe rather haven't noticed heavy engineering in ships outside certain areas, but I can deal with one no problem. Since up to and including most of my missions in dangerous, the recommended rank has always been a good indicator of the possible ship loadouts you're going to face off against, it really caught me off guard seeing this absolute unit on an underranked mission.
