Yes, I also have that 'in it's monster disk plastic box' (for the time), There was quite an uproar when it first came out as no one had 'at that point' truly modeled space dynamics.
- It proved to be a rather difficult game to master, all other games still used 'fluid' or 'air' type steering for any space based game.
- It offered the player movement closer to how it should be and showed all the other game designers how it should be made.
- It was the start of space flight where you really needed to think ahead of what and where you wanted to be or go.
- This changed what could be done, but sadly it was 'before it's time', and never really took off.
- Now we are seeing all the space based Sims's and games adapt truer dynamics for what should be correctly modeled movement.
At the time of it's release personnel computers were just starting to offer the user options for higher end computing, up until then it was a niche market and only or normally only ventured into by the 'nerds' of the day. Still very costly for the top end systems and somewhat limited in what could be created. It's hard to judge what end of the gamming industry fueled the push for better, faster, home user systems. At that point it was one of the few games that required the user to have a system that was minimum, mid end to high end, just to play it. (unheard of at the time, as everyone else dumbed down there games for the absolute lowest end user.)
Good to see it still works, kind of of retro now. And we are about to see 64bit, double precision gaming arrive within the next few months, this should change everything. Graphics card designers as well as game creators will need to 'get on the ball' if they want to stay viable, as this change opens the area of active play in any created game sphere.
- We have been limited to less that 10km from the spawn point before corruption of location points happens. (32bit, persistence universe)
- That changes to 100's of Km with double precision and 64bit.
