Infinity

Been following Infinity for years... isnt this a kinda cut down version though? A kinda combat sim set in a single (but massive) system...

Yeah, it's not the MMO, but I have hopes that it could be a great game in itself. We shall have to see exactly what is planned for it once the Kickstarter launches.

A space combat sim with seamless planetary landing still sounds awesome to me :)

This Battlescape KS keeps getting pushed back. Apparently they are still polishing the videos to be released during the course of the KS project.

About a month ago, Flavien Brebion said ...

"Another major difference with ED and SC's gameplay is also the scale of the battles. We're aiming at doing hundreds of players vs hundreds, not just a dozen."

Keith Newton has also stated ...

"We are aiming for a couple hundred players on a machine/bandwidth combination that is accessible to most enthusiasts."

So its looking like a MMO (SideA vs SideB) in a solar system that could include seamless planetary surface interaction.

A few screengrabs released this month from the upcoming KS video which is still being tweaked - one thing I-Novae have in abundance, is patience.

I wonder how planetary bodies in ED's Beta2 will compare, as Beta2 will be 'a big step forward in the detail of the science used to model the creation of planetary bodies, their compositions, atmospheres – even life – within star systems'.

Good to know I-Novae have an interest in ED as well. Posted a few days ago..

"Some of our artists want us to pursue a slightly less realistic aesthetic so it's an ongoing debate. For example we had a big discussion about whether or not red stars should actually emit red light. If you look at most other space games, including E:D, their red stars actually emit white or a slightly red light stuck_out_tongue. Some of our artists didn't like the fact that red light more or less makes everything, well, red and presumably neither did the artists for those other games."

If we disregard the obvious (atmosphere on ground level, added detail to the mesh when getting closer, and displacement added to create terrain) I actually already think it looks better in EDs current build when you look at the planet from orbit.

.. and another teasing image posted recently from their planet engine. You can just make out the faint rings in the upper left area of the image.

That is very good looking i do hope that Infinity finally makes it on the Kickstater and i do hope they get funded even though the big kickstater gaming gold rush seems to be over.

An update on the pre-KS video delay ...

"The delay is primarily being caused by my recent move across the US and the guy who was going to do the production work on our video footage flaking. I recorded the footage a day before I moved and made it available to him however he hasn't done anything with it. In the subsequent 3 weeks my life has been quite hectic as I get settled into a new residence, and city. I'll probably end up buying final cut pro and processing the video myself."

It has always been a part-time project and hence the near decade long development time. I guess he should be thankful that the guy who flaked didn't leak the source video ... shame.

I would have helped him stitch up the video myself, but fear the strike of a jealous cobra.

If 100 vs 100 will be possible then you will see it in ED as well! ;)
CIG and SC fanboys were also always claiming that a major difference of SC vs ED would be the scale of the battles. It's easy to claim things without delivering a demo. ;)
I am quite sure that the best devs sit at FD.

I think this game has gotten into a bit of a rough spot. I think if the battlescape (or whatever it is they call it) would have gotten rolling around the time Sc was announced, they could have gottena huge lift. Now they're kind of in the wake of the FD and CIG behemoth.

Still, I have followed this with great interest for a long time. I-Novae do seem to have different ideas compared to FD and CIG, so I still think there is a place for this game. Still, I think the long delays and poor timing has not done great things to this project.

Nice update.

Great tease at the end as he tickles that atmospheric entrance. I guess they are saving that grand penetration for the KS.

Well Infinity have already shown atmospheric entry so i doubt that it will so grand a surprice..it's hardley virgin territory :p

Remarkable video, and a testament to a great engine in the making. Hope we see more soon from them, a space game based on it would be wonderful!!

I really like the fact they are emulating the planets' shadow on the rings as sharply and correctly as possible. Take heed FDEV, the rings in ED could look spectacular that way too!

Flavian must have spendt ..what 13 years? on the engine by now so it will be interesting to see if he can finally commit to a kickstarter or if he will prospone at the last minute again. :D

Ehh, I spent years following this, active on the forums... Flavian isn't going to do it, is my guess. How damn hard should it be to put together the Kickstarter to fund a game using the thing he's made?

He's going to pull out again, and keep sitting on this gold-egg forever, chipping at the bits that aren't yet mirror-smooth.

Same, I followed this for years and years. I have a feeling this is suffering from overly perfectionist tendancies and a bit of fear of success.

The engine looks great, but I think it is being treated the way one would a model train landscape in their basement; working on it for years only to have a few come down and say "ooh that's nice."

If they finally come out with more than that (relatively fun) combat demo from 2008-09 I will take a look. At least once a year now I check on them and many times nothing has changed.
