Ingame route planner blows

I used to think that the copy-paste thing would be a bar to using spansh in VR, but in my Rift I found that I could start a jump, pick up my right Rift controller, throttle down (in case anything went wrong), use the Rift Controller to switch to a view of spansh, copy the next star in the route, and return to Elite Dangerous before I exited the hyperspace tunnel. Net loss of time: zero.

I also wrote a Voice Attack macro for inserting the copied star into the galaxy map after gathering my Neutron boost, so I didn't lose too much time on that either.

Actually, if you think about it a bit harder, it is a very useful feature. 😉

I guess I'm just dumb.

If I tell a computer to follow instructions and it doesn't, I don't see how that's useful. Unless you're into the nanny-computer "I'm protecting you from yourself and doing exactly the opposite of what you asked me to do for your own good", which I'm not, so I just don't see it. If it wants to give me a warning in case it was accidental, fine, but do as you've been instructed.

FDev could have easily implemented that solution if they wanted to. But what do you think would have happened then?

Their Customer Support centre would have been flooded with requests & complaints from stranded pilots who don't have enough fuel to jump out of the system the in-game route plotter has recommended to them. The discussion forums would have people complaining all the time about how rubbish the in-game route plotter is for not taking fuel tank capacity into consideration.

A 3rd party tool can get away with doing what you suggest, because they don't have to pay people to man a customer support centre to respond to those complaints.

FDev are erring on the side of caution by inserting some smarts into the route plotter that won't result in pilots stranding themselves using in-game tools.

if this was by design, why is it so easy accidentally shoot a clean ship or cop? why is it so easy to build your ship in a way thaglt will kill you when you deploy hardpoints?

no.....this isn't FDevs "intelligent design". this is bad code.

It’s not bad code just because it doesn’t behave the way you want. Everyone else is happy with it.

Besides - shooting cops or deploying hardpoints on a bad build are both recoverable situations, and won’t result in a call to customer service. However, if you find this does happen to you a lot, and you don’t know how to recover from it, then your earlier comment:

I guess I'm just dumb.

Makes more sense, and the route plotter is doing you a favour. 😉

you know, you don't HAVE to White Knight and apologize for what is clearly not working as intended. It's ok. Just because a game has flaws doesn't mean you're a lesser person for playing it. It's ok for a game not to be perfect.

I bet you think the current FSS problems are part of FDev's Intelligent Design as well?

My point is I don't like nanny-computer. I don't want someone doing things for my own good. I'm perfectly capable of making my own decisions and accepting their consequences. I'll get by without mommy somehow.

Dude - chill out. It’s just a game.

Playing devils advocate here the ED plotter has to contend with the whole game being present whilst plotting giving it much less resources to contend with. Personally I think it does a reasonable job for what it does.
