Iain's Insane Ship Name Generator

I was inspired by @JohnStabler's ship name generator to geek out a bit and code up a pattern based name generator.

So I did.

It's very rough and ready, and might throw errors, but it does work.

The concept is that you can pass in a pattern such as Adjective Noun, Adverb Verb Noun, or whatever and get out a random name that matches the pattern.

For starters I'm looking for people who'd like to help develop some interesting patterns.

The biggest problem at the moment is the immensely large and somewhat mental word-list. It needs narrowing down to be more Elitesque.

If you get blank spots in a name it's probably an incorrect pattern code. Please note they are case sensitive. That's really due to the word list, not my choice.

If there's an incorrect code it will get ignored, hence the blanks.

It's like "Call My Bluff" I just managed from a simple Adjective - Noun combination "Sternutatory Bonina" neither word being in my vernacular I looked them up. My dictionary doesn't support the last word, but the first one means "induced sneezing" which is excellent, and I shall endeavour to use it more in conversation.

That simple combination works well (with "The" as an option) but is very similar to John's, only run by the illegitimate child of Giles Brandreth, Stephen Fry and Richard Stilgoe.

So [T A N] is a goer for a decent pattern?

I'm fond of some of the [T v A N] results.

Crazy ship names?

There's an OXP in Oolite that generates names for NPC ships, and it comes up with some real crackers (referencing another thread there) - from the standard types such Maraus Maru to the unlikely Sander's Obsidian Jungle of the Libertine.

My own favoured ship name came from a similar program:

The Saviour's Haste.

I'm thinking a custom word list will definitely work better. And perhaps even custom part tagging.

eg. Ripping planet and system names and tagging them as such. Allowing planets to then be used in a pattern.

I think so. Some good non-Culture names come from just nouns or adverbs too. I must confess, I'm just expanding my vocabulary on there at the moment.

Well, it's about objects attaching to the verb. If your verb needs an object to make sense then it's a transitive. The verb "to hold" is a good example - "the jar holds" or "Yaffle holds" doesn't make much sense, but "the jar holds water" or "Yaffle holds a gun" does.

Intransitive verbs don't need that object, indeed what looks like an object is probably something like an adverb telling you about the verb. So "Yaffle arrived" is fine "Yaffle arrived ten minutes late" is also fine, the last bit just describes the verb.

Which is as close to explaining it fully as an accountant can be.

Many verbs take both forms.

In all honesty, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but in your generator following a transitive with a noun would make for more sense-like names.

On another note, anyone ever noticed how similar to Bagpus's Professor Yaffle, Professor Dawkins looks?
