So you have an opinion on what is fun, and because others disagree with that opinion they are wrong. Because that's all you have is an opinion.

Eventually, it is not about who feels affected by an incident like that or not, but how FD handles those irregularities and how transparent they are about them and their resolution. That's why they have to follow-up reasonable suspicions like stated in OP and utter a public clarification afterwards. Otherwise, this will give rise to conspiracy theories and distrust between parts of the player base and the devs.

Have they not been clear enough? They stated what happened. They stated what was being done to fix it. They stated that those players who they could confirm were intentionally exploiting a bug to make extra money would be set back, and those that just fell into their billion through no fault of their own (myself being one of them) would be able to keep their credits at the expense of being eliminated from the Race to Elite.
What else are you expecting of them as far as being open and transparent?
When the time has come, it is too late to take the money away from the cheaters. They have to do it now or never.
It is already worsening my gaming experience, knowing that a cheater can cross my way any time I play in open. So I am forced to play solo if I want a somewhat fair experience.
To clarify OP's concern. Specifically, if the amount of ~5 billion is just coincidental or if there could be a connection.

It's just the biggest number that will fit into 32 bits, if interpreted as unsigned.
The usual programming reason for 4,294,967,295 to crop up is mixing up signed and unsigned interpretation... because the above is also how you represent...

I don't play the rep game. I am here only for the discussion. I don't care about fake accounts too. I am dealing with arguments, not with accounts. That is the way I see it.
This would be pretty boring as I usually know what I write before I do it. But playing Elite solo is a lot of fun. At least more fun than playing with cheaters.

So the REAL reason is that Frontier messed up in their code and / or their support messed up trying to fix their accounts.
The players do not deserve the credits due to the error, they should be swiftly removed. I don't understand how anyone can say this doesn't affect your game when this is a multiplayer game where credits are the only means of improving your ship!
