Installer shouldn't need to restart the computer

As a programmer and tech enthusiast myself, I'm doing my best to be as non-ranty as possible, though this issue ... really... makes me... twitch....

If NVIDIA can install a new GPU driver without having to reboot the computer, then the Elite Dangerous launcher installer certainly has no excuse. It's a game. It should NOT EVER need to reboot the computer. Please stop doing this. If you think you need to reboot the computer, perhaps you've overlooked a better way of doing something? If you're doing it "just in case", then suggest to the user that a reboot may help if they experience any problems, but don't have the launcher tell me I need to reboot. I don't need to reboot, and with a tonne of stuff open, rebooting is a massive inconvenience.

That is all.

only needs to reboot if it need to install microsoft vc+ 2012

it wont need a restar if your pc is updated

"programmer" and "tech enthusiast" doesn't even have basic runtimes installed. >.<

Ok, well thanks for the uninformed snark. Maybe there was some quirk on my machine, but fwiw, I have VS2013 and VS2015 installed, and countless games of many types, most of which have installed one of the various runtimes (and not required a reboot, mind you). I can't imagine how it could have come to pass that I didn't have a given runtime installed. Even so, the installer finished up by telling me I need to reboot. Perhaps I was an edge case, but my point still stands.

Hey,

I uninstalled Elite coz I needed some place on my SSD, then I bought a new SSD and decided to reinstall Elite on it. Last night I started the install... The morning I found that it didn't and EDlauncher was not started... I started it again at 8:30pm and I went somewhere for a dinner with friends... When I came back at 10pm, EDlauncher was not on the screen.... The Pc has just reboot.

    ?

Is Edlauncher rebooting the pc without asking ? ...If it is, that's a big issue.

Ok your talking about adding a SSD drive. Did you reinstall windows? If so. It could be Windows is still updating.

Windows 10 will quite happily reboot your PC if you leave it long enough. Lol
Fiddle with the update options to prevent this.

I had to stop it, after I set my PC to download a game, went to work, and came home to find it had restarted!
Game never finished downloading...

It's set to manual now. Lol

I didn't reinstall Windows its another SSD for games (I unistalled Elite to install Doom 2016 which takes 50gb), but I think you are right guys, I saw on the message panel that an update had been succesfully installed.

I thought I set win 10 to never install an updated without asking me before but... I ll check.

Thanks

Unfortunately, it's not under FD's control. Some dlls require a reboot. It's version specific. Usually Microsoft dlls are the worst offenders, but once a particular dll is installed, you won't need to reboot again (due to that specific dll). The more software you have installed, the less likely you are to be forced to reboot.
