Installing 4.0, Avoiding Temp Files Filling Up C:

So, where is Steam installed, on C: or some other drive?

I understand you have Legacy Horizons installed on E:, but where is Steam itself installed?

As others have said above, I would bet that if Steam is installed on C: then it is using C: for "temp storage" during the install and the 50GB size of H4.0/Ody is too big for the "temp storage" space you have available.

@Imo gave an accurate description of how you can fix it, but personally, I would rather uninstall Steam, and all installed games, completely, making sure to SAVE ALL of your game saves for all of your games first, and as needed.

Also, as I said above, I installed Steam on its own 1TB SSD on my current PC. And, as a consequence of that, this problem is avoided, not that I planned it that way specifically for that reason. I did that so that Steam would not interfere with my boot drive in case I needed to reinstall the OS from scratch, not that that is a problem these past 13 years or so since Win7 released.

That is the setting? I was just wondering what the actual size is.

As I stated above, Steam is installed on my D:, and has a separate library folder on my E:. I am not installing to the C:, and have never had an issue with any other program or game eating up my C: free space (some much larger than ED). I don't see how reinstalling Steam will help, when it currently is not on my C:, but the install is still eating up my C: space.

The setting for my page file is 12487MB, yes. I couldn't find an actual Page file on my C:, even though I can see invisible files. Perhaps Windows 10 has it elsewhere..?

Silly me. I just have a single Samsung 2TB NVMe solid state drive. Everything goes on it. No issues of any kind. Still have around 1.6 TB free.

That's fantastic, but doesn't help me at all. You said 18GB is not enough space on my OS partition, but failed to address why that would be the case when I have no issues with any other programs or installations. I now have 24GB free on C: after some cleanup.

It would appear that ED uses your default OS partition to handle temporary files, even when writing to an entirely different drive. This is an issue with Frontier's installer, not my system.

Apologies.

You're installing Odyssey through the ED Launcher?

I guess it comes down to can you free up around 51 or 52 GB in the name of science? A little over double your current value. If you disable the page file, it could free up about 12 GB, provided you can find it to prove that there is one to remove.

The hiberfile and swapfile files may also be temporarily turned off, adding additional gains. But I don't know for sure.

Or you could uninstall in steam and reinstall, if you're willing.

The screen shot I posted above was from Win 10. IIRC, there are two flags, one for hidden files and one for system files.

No problem, I appreciate the help. Just to be clear I'm not installing Odyssey, just Horizons 4.0, if that matters at all. When I get home from work I will check for the page file again. Before I left today, I started the install for a third time to see if perhaps it could "power through" while I'm not using the system, we'll see if it worked.

Short of that, I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling through Steam. Does anyone know if Horizons 4.0 will install by default now, and not Legacy? I don't see any options on Steam itself to choose..

I would expect Steam to install all of it at once but this combo is new.

The difference between H4.0 and Ody is your license. If you do not own Ody, your licenses will let you play most of the game with the exception of tenuous atmosphere planet landing, on foot gameplay, and you can't instance with players in Ody, only with players in H4.0. Otherwise, they are the exact same executable software and game assets. All 50 GB worth, and legacy horizons is another 20GB, so 70 GB total.

So I got home from work... and it seems everything went smoothly and Horizons 4.0 is now installed!

I'm not sure how or why, there could be a few answers, but I suppose the problem was aggravated by me trying to multitask (nothing heavy, just watch a stream) and the maxed out C: space was very noticeable. I'm still left wondering why this occurred when no other game or installation on my alternate partitions/drives has ever given me issues, but perhaps I was making a bigger deal of it than was necessary. I don't have further details considering I tried this installation while I was at work today.

Regardless, thanks for all the suggestions!

See you in the stars CMDRs. o7

It isn't.

You said earlier that your C drive is 120 GB. Any Windows technician will tell you that you must have no less than 15% of your drive completely empty in order for your OS to keep functioning properly.

You said you have 18 GB of open space. That is EXACTLY 15% of your drives total space. That is the limit. Anything you do from that point on can cause problems, especially trying to install programs larger than that amount of space, regardless of where you're installing them.

It could all come down to dumb luck as to what programs are running at the time. For example, if Windows is indexing a drive and you try to install at the same time, boom. Error. Simply because you do not have enough available space on your C drive to allow that to happen.

That is why most people A, never use a drive that small for their OS drive and B leave at least 25% of it blank to allow for any sort of large operation to have plenty of room.
