I'm a Traveller superfan, and have been since 1977.

Me too. A game so deadly you can die during character generation is the definition of hardcore, IMHO.

Who's making the game now? I have the original Black Books, some GURPS, some MegaTraveller and some Mongoose - I must dig out that Azhanti High Lightning box from the loft.

...What? What you mean, die *during* character generation? oO

Ehh, I got nothing against RP and I like when people get into the setting of a game, but, in my case there are two problems.
For one, I'm terrible at RP.
For two, I can't relate to the Elite universe in the slightest, so I can't really fit into it with any RP that I would do. There's just not enough there for me to RP with.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "terrible". Roleplaying is simply imagining yourself in someone else's shoes and trying to keep you actions "true" to that someone else (i.e. not suddenly changing your behavior without any reason - pretty much what you do in real life). If you roleplay a peace-loving, altruistic trader or an explorer, you avoid confrontations and don't attack anyone without a reason ("they shot first"), nor will you trade in slaves or other questionable items etc. etc.

That is probably true to any newcomers to the series unless they spend time reading up about the universe and its history. The official tie-in novels and novellas and short stories help here, but only if you are already interested enough in the universe to give them a chance, of course.

Yes, we could do with some more lore info in-game, that would be really cool.
Also, we should have an ability to describe our commander or put any other message to other players that would be visible under "contacts" info. This would help the RP immensely methinks.

RP's something I enjoy, be it in gaming or pen&paper style.

Pen & paper style is a form of gaming, but I understand what you mean.

The ex-wife was really into it. I didn't like wearing masks and putting on Latin accents, though.

Role-playing does not necessarily imply amateur drama club.

I always roleplay. Even in shooters.

Most shooters are exceedingly easy to role-play in.

My CMDR just makes up history on the spot to suit his needs, like many real political and military figures.

Hey there :D

I was talking with someone here about roleplaying in Elite once the multiplayer features get more fleshed out, and I'm curious how many of you pilots out there have an interest on such a thing.
Feel free to vote and explain why you lean one way or the other ^^

I don't necessarily need to be playing with other humans to RP. I stick to myself in this and in the other world. Trust (no) one is my motto. :)

What is role playing? I am Achilles Maelstrom! (and then some other guy with a boring life, who needs to get up every morning to make his boss even richer)

Oh, thanks :)

Pretty sure he was going for innuendo, mate.

Some people fell "silly" or unconfortable playing something -- but I agree that it's nothing hard and can be made fun and easy by practicing ^^ Just takes a certain detachment.

I also agree about the not-caring part needing a better lore -- currently I just can't care about a random person who I will never see in-game doing something I won't ever participate in some place is nothing more than a ball of rock that appears on the news. But I must say that although the news-delivering system is partly to blame, I just think the game needs an actual better lore. I mean, who cares if the Emperor will marry or someone like that dies? That's gossip and completely misses the pragmatic point of gameplay that could make RP'ing more interesting. We're space pilots, things that affect us are system lockdowns, huge wars, planetary bombardments, and not a royal ceremony.

Now if we could follow the Imperial Marriage procession, or if we could walk around and attend the wedding, *then* it would be important. But all news I've seen since December have been utterly useless and devoid of any soul, with as much useful content as the TMZ website has. FD could really rethink their news and fit it to the gameplay :)

I actually do it now. The lore of ED is great for RP because its so vague and let you fill the gaps with your own imagination. I also only bounty hunt the factions i don't like, i even let juicy 80.000 cred targets live, if they belong to a faction wich is allied with me^^

I'am looking forward for more community features to make rp more easy but i kinda like it how it is now anyway.
