I think the reason why so many planetary nebulae is missing, is simply because in 1000+ years they have just become so little dense you cannot really see them anymore.
And in the case of the Helix nebula, it has become so little dense it is just a grey blob.

Slightly off topic here, apologies.

My guess is that nebulae would be roughly evenly spread about the galaxy, so there should be some on the other side that we can't see from here due to them being too far away/behind the big blob (that's the official term btw) of stars in the middle etc. I can't believe that our little arm has exclusivity on nebulae.

Have any intrepid explorers found any game nebulae that are not 'observable' in real life (so they'd be fictitious) - as in, while on the far side are there any new ones ready for the exploring?

There was a planetary nebulae thread which had lot of them.

I found one surrounding a black hole near the core. Couple of 100 ly out from Saggi A. The bigger nebulae you can spot on the map more easily, and I think the one's further away are completely madey-up :)

edit:
To add to the list some of the ones I visited recently, but I'm at work, so no pics or coords:

Fine ring (shapely) - reachable
Ghost of Jupiter - reachable
Lemon - not reachable
Red spider - reachable

So I was going to do some trading last night but after this thread wound up reading about nebulae, novae and supernovae. Guess there could be worse ways to spend your evening.

There are some procedurally generated nebulae on the far side of the galaxy. Unfortunately there's nothing like the number or richness of what we have in our local area.

Just so ya know, I went there last night. Nothing special at all. It looks very interesting on the galaxy map - a really big white dot. But when you arrive it's a huge red carbon star - no apparent nebula or dust of any kind. It's pretty incredible but basically identical to Y Canum Venaticorum which is much closer. Although this one does have a really interesting set of planets. I won't spoil anymore :D

And yep Yaffle, the game is full of procedural nebulae, on both sides of the core. It's just that on our side we have a lot of real ones too. I'm going to try and work out what is the furthest "real" nebula in game. There will be a couple really far out :D

NGC 1931 is both real and in game. I swung past it the other night, not the prettiest I've ever seen but what can you do?

What is the method to home in on a nebula? I can't tag them in the galaxy map.

Funny thing, my posts are sometimes disappearing on the first "Post Quick Reply"
