IPD adjustment in graphics settings

Been having eye strain whilst using the CV1 with ED recently. Had already performed the physical IPD adjustment as my IPD is at the low end ~60mm. In game this helps both eyes be in the sweet-spot for the left and right lens but it still didn't feel right. I always thought the game would automatically adjust the virtual eye position for rendering each eye using the IPD value from the Rift. I did a bit of reading and it seems probably not.

There is a setting in...

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.XML labelled "IPD amount". I adjusted this to match the my IPD and now the game is much clearer, with less eye strain.

I haven't seen anyone post such findings before so I thought I would share in case it helped others. Maybe it is psychosomatic but it definitely seems clearer to me now!

The default setting seems to 100mm which is very odd indeed as I think this is outside the IPD range of both the Rift and Vive?

Yes, 100mm IPD... maybe for Andre the Giant perhaps!

Did it change how big your pilot avatar look like in ED? I always look like I weigh a lot less than I should do. And shorter.

Weirdly no the scale didn't seem to change. I have never found it too bad though. The avatar is pretty skinny considering he never leaves the chair! Length of arms etc seems to match my own though.

My IPD when I adjust the lens spacing is about 62mm but the xml file is <IPDAmount>0.050500</IPDAmount>. What figure would I enter to match my IPD?

Mine was 0.001 and I changed it to 0.00060. No sure if this is correct though!

Interesting that your IPD wasn't at 0.001. How do you launch ED? From Steam, From Oculus Home or directly from the launcher?

I usually use Steam as I use Virtual Desktop to switch out of the game to view desktop. I've tried 0.062000 but haven't noticed any difference using Home or Steam.

But was it looking OK before changing the settings? I've just tried 0.00062 and still couldn't see any difference.

Before I adjusted it felt like I was going crossed eyed in the game. After playing I would get some eye strain. Seems better after I adjusted. I don't seem to have the same value as everyone else though. My default was 0.001 and I updated to 0.0006. I just tried changing the setting to 0.006 and 0.06 and didn't notice much of a difference until I got to 0.06. It seems quite subtle.

What values do you guys have for FOV and StereoFocalDistance? I have 54.32 and 25.0 respectively.

Actually I jut messed with this again I am now not sure this setting applies to HMDs. If I adjust the 3D separation setting under 3D this value in the settings file adjusts accordingly. I think this applies to 3D TVs with glasses as I once tested on my TV prior to Rift.

Maybe this is not doing anything after all?

I think you could be right about not doing anything. Especially if it's that subtle as my ageing eyes wouldn't pick it up anyway. Actually when I move the IPD adjuster the image changes only very slightly and all I really notice is an increase in FOV

The IPD setting in Config has no effect. It is not connected to your HMD video rendering which support confirmed to me when I dealt with them regarding the sizing. Some improvements are supposedly planned, so fingers crossed, but the above mentioned setting has no effect in VR ;)

Thanks. Did support confirm whether the Oculus IPD adjustment had any effect on the placement of the virtual cameras in ED?
