Games play very differently when one bad decision can while out months, or even years, of effort in an instant. Just like some people thrive on PvP, some people enjoy putting it all on the line. I've very much enjoyed "Ultra Hardcore Mode" (aka iron man with no health regen) in Minecraft, despite only completing two of the worlds I'd created.
I would prefer an iron man mode for Elite: Dangerous myself, so that I'm playing with like minded players. I would't mind getting permantly killed by a player-killer if they're facing the same risk I am. But without an actual mode, and wanting to play in open, I'm not about to go full iron man when the player killers get a slap on the wrist when killed.
As a compromise, I'm using mossfoot's
Pilot Ejection Table. I'm seriously considering retiring Commander Stevenson and starting a second Commander. She's seen 14 rebuys (mostly from Buckyball Racing) and has had seven ships shot out[SUB]1[/SUB] from under her to date. Unfortunately, the last couple releases has left me wary of buying a second account, and I'd prefer to keep her and her stable of ships for racing purposes.

1 My explanation for the "insurance loophole" event, as well as why we get the EXACT same ship, complete with mods, at rebuy is that our actual ships are recovered and repaired.
