Is 8GB enough on a new GFX card?

Just looking at replacing my GTX 1070 8GB with a more up-to-date card and was wondering if the 8GB cards are worth getting or is it better to shell out more for a 12GB one for example.

Really tempted to pick up a 3070ti but since my current card shows usage in Odyssey of just about 8GB at times I wondered if I'd be better off shelling out for a 3080 with its 12GB.

Any insights greatly appreciated.

Depends on what resolution you plan on running. If you're in 1080, the 3060 ti runs this game wide open with no problem. It'll handle it at 1440 as well. But if you're going 4K wide open, the 3070 or 3080 with 8 gigs should still be plenty. The extra 4 gigs would be nice to have for the future, but as far as present games go the 8 gig 3070 or 3080 should handle pretty much everything just fine in 4k.

It's important to remember that no matter how much memory your card has, it will try to utilize it all. The more things it can store in memory, the less the processor has to work and the cooler and more efficient the card runs.

Running an MSI Nvidia RTX 2070 Super Gaming X 8 GB dual fan version. Still okay for me. If you want to be a bit more future proof maybe look after an AMD RX 6700 XT 12 GB card. :)

If you want some future proofing, get the most expensive card you can afford.

3080/12gb could be an good option
3080ti could be an even better one

On that, it's important to note that the processor is FAR more important than the amount of memory.

Any Ti edition card with 8 GB will flat out SMOKE any non-Ti version with 12 GB of memory. It's not even close.

Well this will almost certainly be the last card I ever buy (septuagenarian) and I will want to use it in a new build PC next year (current one is i7 6700k) so I had been looking at those. Thing is of course is the ti really worth 50% more than the other? Do I really want to spend over £1k?

If you can wait until next year, it's possibly worth to wait for the next gen RTX4000 and see how prices develop and how good let's say the yet-to-be-released RTX4070 will be in the end. The first founder models NVidia just presented are considerably faster than the current generation.

And they'll cost roughly 3.5 times what a 3000 series card will.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not talking about the 4090 here, and the miners are out of the way luckily. It's just so that nobody I know of still considers buying a 2080 just because of the price. YMMV.

The 4080 has already been announced to run $1,200.00

I tend to read the room on a post. If a guy is really concerned about a 125 dollar price difference, I doubt seriously that he'll be OK with a 900 dollar price difference.

The guy's asking about a Honda Accord and you're trying to put him in a CT5 Cadillac.

Actually I'm looking at £800+ --up to considering £1250ish for 3080 ti 12GB - so is that in the Lada or Fiat range .... LOL not interested in £2k cards.

8GiB is generally enough VRAM for Odyssey, but the 3080 is a faster card irrespective of VRAM capacity and the extra memory sure won't hurt.

The 3080 ti is, overall, less than 10% faster than the 3080 12GB.

no idea about prices in uk, but on overclockers.uk the differences between 3080/12gb and 3080TI is between £150-£200

Thanks everyone for your input, greatly appreciated.

So, in summary (correct me if I am wrong) - for use mainly in Flight Sim, Elite, etc (no shooters or slashers) - no interest in VR (tried it didn't get on with it) - playing at 1440 (maybe 4k) - the 3080ti 12 GB is the bees knees.

I think I can get one for under 1K - is there any downside (i.e. would a similar price range team red* offering surpass this)?

* I have played team green for many a year.
