Is Corsair speed limited?

Hi there. I am curious about this 600 m/s speed limit that appears to be set for the Corsair. Unless it is some kind of bug, I find it somewhat weird considering the nature of this ship. I mean, my Clipper is at least 40 T heavier than the Corsair, it has class 6 thruster, and it is faster than the Corsair that comes with class 7 thruster. As a matter of fact, Corsair with 6A G5 dirty drag drive cruises at 471 m/s and boosts to 598m/s and the same ship with 7A G5 dirty drag drive only gains 2-3 m/s. Am I missing something?

This definitely isnt new. There are other ships for which it’s practical to create combat fittings that are at or below Thruster Minimum Mass. This is just the first ship that turned that into a standard feature.

Here’s the list: Alliance Chieftain, Dolphin, Krait Mk II, Krait Phantom, Orca, Vulture, Anaconda.

What they generally have in common are unusually powerful thrusters, core modules (like the power plant) that are easily undersized without sacrificing something important, and a hull mass that’s a lower portion of the overall ship mass compared to the usual modules. Obviously not all of these can be serious combat ships, but they all have the basic ability to reach minimum mass with practicality.

The anaconda is the weird one. Its hull is only 400t which usually ends up less than half of the mass from the total ship. Strip down the power plant and power distributor, go undersized on optionals, use 0E shield boosters and you can have a combat Conda that boosts 405 m/s.

I see. So, if I understand it correctly. I am reaching maximum speed for this ship with class 6 thrusters and class 7 thrusters wouldn't make it any faster, and instead would allow to reach the same speed with much heavier build? Also, does it mean that the same class engine is rated for a different maximum speed in the different ships and that's why Clipper is faster at higher mass with smaller thruster?

All ships are speed limited!
Usually a ship would accelerate to much higher speed in space.

A Mamba is faster than a FDL with the same mass and the same thruster.

Max speed doesn't increase below minimum mass.

Also, consider the boost speed for the Corsair with 5D vs 6D vs 7D thrusters, engineered for dirty drives + drag drives. Not a lot of difference.

Another manifestation of the convention of the game, if the total mass is reduced to 378t, the same engine will not be able to accelerate above 600.
It's not vakkum around, it's ether ;)

Max possible speed of Corsair is 600 m/s... whats so difficult to understood about it?

The fact that Corsair, have like 300-400 ton to add, before getting close to its minimal thruster mass at 7A with drag DD at 945?
Anything bellow minimal mass does not change speed in anyway, it only affect jump range.

Folks should stop lookin at other ships for "comparsion" because it makes them more blind to actuall mechanics of game.

D-rated thrusters make literally zero sense even for test purposes. :)
Exploration builds*🤪 Though lately I've been using A-rated thrusters on my exploration ships, too, now that we have so. much. jumprange. and exobiology.

There's one D module, though, that no-one should ever use under any circumstances, even on a 200% min-maxed exploration ship: D-rated power plant. It's just silly🙃

*I used 5D thrusters on my old Phantom because they were lighter and gave better speed than 4A.

Yes, we have studied in schools and universities, and if we accept the convention that the maximum speed of a body is limited (in space), then changing the mass of the body by 2-3 times does not affect this speed - it is very difficult to accept :)

I guess there are many kinds of engines and how are they applied, as for example a truck can have a bigger engine than a Ferrari, but it does not mean that it will run faster

From Coriolis: Stock Corsair base, engineer thrusters with DD5 + Drag Drives.
7D thrusters: 548 m/s boost.
6D thrusters: 541 m/s boost.

Something looks a bit fishy there. Of course, some people will argue that A-rated drives should always be used, but shouldn't the 7D thrusters with over 50% more Optimal Mass compared to the 6D ones give more boost speed difference than 7 m/s?

There's a different question here. We load a truck and it has exactly the same speed as if it were empty.

"Let's build a ship to explore the galaxy! Let's use this crappy Corsair and let's use a 6D thuster on it crippling its boost speed (which is pretty much its only advantage) by 50 m/s, in order to gain something like 4 Lys of jump range while way better ships like the Mandalay exist, not to mention fleet carriers."

Yeah, totally makes sense. :)

Do people explore using fleet carriers? Shurely the 15mins to 10hour "jump time" would make it incredibly awkward to go scan every planet in systems next to eachother?

Using a Corsair with its SCO I could very easily travel to another system and scan all the planets and take pretty pictures.

Sorry terrible joke and off topic.
But I am really happy to see fdev making the corsair so unique and it making a lot of people wake up and realise how thrusters work with their minimum/optimal/maximum mass brackets.

Help them people LEARN something.
Cause you only grow old when you stop learning!
