Newcomer / Intro Is "Elite: Dumb" actually a rank?

Hi guys,
tonight after some hours of smuggling and trading I finally landed to my first 140k cr! It could not be that amount for you millionnaires, but for me believe me it's quite of an accomplishment. The turning point has been enhancing FSD. That 1LY up range made the difference!! I've been able to reach slave selling stations in 5 hops instead of 15!
Yeh-hey! Now I can afford an Adder with some fitting, and I'm ready to go trading/smuggling up to the Cobra!
I'll keep the sidey and empower it a little to kick some pirate butt. Just to improve my combat skills. I've read Adder can be good at killing too, if well fitted...
This night I almost suicided attempting to enter a coriolis gate at full speed in silent running... Braaaang and 2% hull, no oxygen, I finally smashed the sidey on the pad and got my slavery reward... Fun fun fun!!!
I think this ED is goingo to be carved in my HD for a long, long time... :)

Glad you hear you are well on your way Annoluce :) Happy journeys

Hi thank you, I' m really starting appreciating this profound game. Now, I got the adder and my sidewinder in a station. What if I die? I did not see any option for assurance when I purchased the adder, I presume it will be offered when i die, isn' it? Is that 5℅ of adder cost?
If I choose to rebuy the ship after death, there will be also the old free sidewinder? Or i'll get only the ship i rebuy? I'd like to get also the sidewinder to do some bounty.

In short... What happens if one dies and has a fleet with multiple ships? Will get an option to rebuy for any of them?

To keep insurance you just have to make sure you have the cash always on hand to cover the cost, and yes it's 5%...you can always find out how much money you need by looking at the right-hand screen in your ship --pressing num key 4 on your keyboard will bring it up. When you are killed you are offered the choice of a free Sidewinder or your current ship and you can choose one or the other but not both

Thank you so much. So apparently if one dies loses the free sidewinder... Anyway I think with the good outfit on the adder it will not be missed on bounty hunt neither.
This also means that it is not worth to have more than one ship at the time in the game cause if you die you lose all ships but the one you rebuy with insurance...correct?
Looking forward to wipe the skies with my brand new space Toyota... :)

When I first started I raked up 12800 credits doing missions and bought mining equipment. I then found a pristine metallic belt and mined there. I was getting about 20k per asteroid. Before long I had a viper and started farming the mineral extraction sites there.

You only pay insurance of the ship you were flying in. All ships you parked somewhere will still be there, including your starter Sidewinder. If you cant pay the insurance, you can toggle upgraded modules off to reduce insurance fee. If that is not enough you restart in a free sidewinder and have to fly the long shameful trip to one of your other ships. The Adder is great fun. I also have an Eagle, Viper and T6 but currently in the Adder. :) Enjoy!

Hi again! I am enjoying flying my adder as trader and courier to get the required money to afford a cobra.
Meanwhile though, while not spending too much money on outfitting it, I'd like at least to improve some modules and get some better weapons, reason is to defend my cargo against those nasty interdictors. So in your opinion what could be the best outfit?
I was interdicted and with a mere 2 shots my shields were down, heat was over max and I barely survived running like a rat. My dignity forces me to be more prepared next time.
What modules/weapons should I invest in, at least, to ensure safer travels and survive interdictors?

if i would use an adder for trading (and that's something i wouldn't do), i would run something like this:

Slightly upgraded, jump-range is decent, should be able to boost twice,
If you get interdicted, just boost twice and engage FSD again. At least, that works against NPCs... against players, that's another thing...

If you stick to LHS 3447, buy grain or other foodstuffs at Dalton and sell at Worlidge, buy biowaste at Worlidge and sell at Dalton. If you sell the exploration scanner and buy some more cargo space, it will help too. Back and forth until you're dizzy. Sadly, the lack of cargo space means you'll probably have to keep going for a while before you can get a ship upgrade. It does get easier as you progress with more cargo space and more cash to buy expensive commodities, making up to 200K per run in a fully racked out Cobra is reasonable. I'd suggest the Adder for your first ship upgrade (found at Worlidge) rather than take a smaller upgrade as the vast increase in cargo will make a difference to your income but make sure you have enough cash left to fill the hold and still pay the insurance if you get popped. DON'T SELL THE SIDEY! It comes in handy for quick reconnaissance, if you upgrade the Power Plant and Frame Shift Drive in the Sidey, it has a decent range too and cheap to replace if you drop into a system that's not particularly friendly.

If you want a change and the ability to earn more once you have the credits available and have shorter travel times, trade between Eravate (McMahon Dock, pick up Mineral extractors) and Potriti (Hartsfield Plant, pick up metals - Copper is a good start).

You can go bounty hunting if you like but remember that a Sidewinder is not particularly strong and takes some experience in flying to keep it in one piece. Best to keep trading until you can afford a ship that can take a bit of punishment and deal it too, the Adder is probably good for that too. Remember to upgrade it though, your basic E grade gear isn't really going to cut it unless you are exceptionally good at the controls.

Hi all,
I'm Max and I play space sims since a long time (wing commander / privateer). I don't want to say I'm old. I'm differently young.
I'm scoring my first few hours in ED. I have to say this space/trade sim is stunning, and I'm really enjoying it, deeper and deeper any time I play. So I'd like to become a better player.
The problem is that I'm quite struggling to rise even few bucks. Didn't expect it to be that steep.
I play solo and I spawned in LHS 3447, like many others, a lone, god-forgotten land somewhere in the galaxy. After some 7 hours of play, I'm still stuck at a mere 10k credits. I'm quite disappointed to say the least.
So, something is wrong or I miss it or maybe I should change my strategy.

Options are:

1. Trading! I've read any possible guide/walkthroug. "Buy low, sell high". Got it. But how can I rise credits with a mere 6 tons cargo, and a 7 ly jump range, in a system where you can get maybe 100/200 credits profit per route? This way I'll get old. Even that dreamed hauler seems to be unreachable for me at the moment. Not to say that any time I jump to LHS 3447, I have to space truck for 10 minutes to reach the nearest station. Sicking!

2. Bulletin board! Just "play courier missions" they say. Got it. Ok, maybe I'm not lucky or maybe I'm in the wrong place, but missions are few and scarce, or I can't afford them, cause faction does not trust me, or they are assasination missions where I would die in one picosecond even before thinking of engaging my hardpoints... So what the heck? I have a mission to deliver slaves which should profit some 20/30k, but I can't buy them because I'm a poor man. I have a mission to deliver commodities, but I can't buy them because the closest system where they are available is beyond range of my FSD!! Missions are miserably falling over due dates and I can't do anything.

3. Combat! "Go bounty hunting, or collecting resources in extraction points or whatsoever". Got it. I did not try yet, but what can I do in my loaned, vanilla, lousy sidey against those bandits? I would probably be shattered by the first viper out there in no time. It is quite hard. I've been once reduced almost to dust from a viper that interdicted me in supercruise, and I'm quite good at stick&ruddering, that's for sure. So is that a real option for me, at this time?

I feel a growing sense of frustration.
I understand the secret is to reach "critical mass". When you have enough money, money will attract more money. The more you get, the more you can buy, the more you can outfit, the more profit you have and so on. My issue is that I'm stuck and I can't get to that critical mass.

So what? Maybe the system LHS 3447 is crap and I should move on Eravate or other systems where I can find better missions and opportunities?
Should I insist in my current system instead and wait for random missions until I get at least a hauler to trade?
Now I feel like Luke Skywalker, working hard from dawn to twilight, at minimum wage and with the nasty sensation that this time Obi Wan will never arrive.

Waiting for your noble advice, Commanders.

Max

Funny that because the first thing that happened to me when I started off as a noob was that I got immediately interdicted by an eagle (I submitted) so I pulled out my 2 pulse lasers and started destroying the shields and hull.

When the eagle was at 33% it jumped out and escaped. On the other hand only 2 layers of shields were she added. Lol.

Max:

Welcome to the game.

Let me suggest piracy. Save up for a few beam lasers and a hatch breaker. Interdict players and NPC's. Steal their cargo, sell it.

100% profit.
