Engineers Is engineers a joke?

I'm not laughing.

I had promised myself I wasn't going to grind for anything, but the lure of greater jump range for my Keelback proved too much. I landed at Farseer, she asked me to get her Meta-Alloys from Maia, got them, returned them and then went through some kind of weird experience where I had to make decisions without any idea what the hell was going on. I ended up with a Keelback with LESS jump range than before I met the silly mare.

Is it possible to discard her nonsense?

It is just as well they have a harsh swear filter on this forum or the twotpuffins that invented this shandytoss might learn a few new naughty words.

Not very happy.

Hibachi.

go to outfitting -> the engineered module -> detail -> remove modification.

that said, if you applied the "increased jumprange" modification, i can't see how you ended with less jumprange.

Just like "choosing my career path" at 13 all over again.

Hahaha

Yes it's possible to discard the engineer mod (not sure if you even need to be in an outfitting garage, though you might).

I like the engineers myself and yes, that's even the experimental (RNG) side of it!

Meh, to paraphrase myself in a different thread, I am not fit to use a tin opener, let alone fly a space ship! I logged back in, went to Mrs Farseer and clicked on something else (not sure what) and now my jump range has indeed increased! A tiny little bit, but yes, it is better :)

Thank you Goemon, I was composing a rage quit post but you pulled me back from the edge!

I still think Engineers totally unintuitive, but the Keelback is heading out into the black again :)

Had you thought about maybe educating yourself just a tiny first?

Or do you normally just jump blindly into the fire?

Of course I didn't! I am a bloke and therefore I am incapable of reading an instruction manual, let alone a wall of text like that.

Well said. "First we must understand our weaknesses before we can..... some hippy rubbish"

Using Engineers does require some effort, just dont let it take over your enjoyment of the game.

Hihi, welcome to the world of the RNGineers.

Very important hint for the future (i.e. once you Unlock Grade 2/3/4/5) FSD - or i.e. Thrusters :
- a re-roll of the dice at the RNGineers can be a signficant downgrade, especially if you attempt to "upgrade" 1 level, i.e. from Grade 1 to Grade 2
- similar to FSD Range mods, Thruster mods also lack the only figure that would be important : the end result before-after

Fear not though, all "Working as intended".
Clear figures (actual Jumprange Before-After and Speeds Before-After) were advised and requested countless times during the original Beta already... Well, they never came.

Workaround if unsure :
- enter actual Ship with its entire Config into EDShipyard
- do an "Upgrade Roll" or "re-roll" within the same Grade -> enter the displayed new Data into EDShipyard to see actual performance increase or decrease

That should prevent you putting an axe through your Display if things go awkward - which they can very easily do with our beloved RNGineers :D

Never mind the axe through the display, I am now back in HIP 61061 and have just been blown up by the station - have a word Boss!

I admit I forgot to request docking. I may have had a couple of little drinkies. Perhaps even my twelve hour night shift overwhelmed me, but hey Lorrah Station should surely have recognised me :D

I have managed to do some engineering without grind, its pretty easy. Just see what you need, don't go out your way to get the stuff, when you have it, get your upgrade.

This might help demystify the screens a bit, so you know what to look for when rolling your FSD range upgrade.

No, the engineers aren't a joke. They aren't engineers either. They're roulette wheel stickmen. A fresh off the bus student at engineering would look at what they do and have a good laugh. But they weren't meant as a joke. Don't know what FD was thinking, but I do love the game so I'll take the bad with the good.

Oh xD
Well, Mrs. Gruber is a fine Aide - but she's extremely strict and knows no Allies when it comes to the parking lot order :D

When setting up a ship for my first trip out into the black (Destination Colonia) I rolled 20 G5 range rolls from farseer. Every one of them was in the low end of the blue bar. Then I rolled another ten in G4 (because I was out of mats for the G5) and got a range increase above all 20 rolls of G5. RNG is lame... I enjoy the game despite some of these terrible implementations though.

A feature that could be amazing and add a lot of choice and personalization, ends up being a thing that people describe by "spent X rolls on"...

This is depressing beyond words...

Why on earth would anyone implement such a promising thing (on paper) in such a terrible way? It's like sometimes they intentionally go the extra mile to do things the least interesting as they possibly can.

Well, I'm fairly confident they don't do it on purpose but it is frustrating.

Man, you must be the unluckiest person I have seen with the engineers. My first roll on a un-engineered drive is nearly always a good one, generally in the above 40% mark. Not sure what you where doing wrong to be honest.

I wasn't doing anything wrong. It's the RNG element which is "wrong". I have over 20 ships and some got it good while others haven't. Thing is I like to play the game not grind it and rolls on a slot machine are (thankfully) not my idea of fun.

Agree that the random element introduced with engineers is ridiculous... but to me, more egregiously, is how it completely unbalanced pvp with no hope of it being "re-balanced" (some may argue it wasn't balanced previous to engineers!). Simply put, engineers was a "content addition" done with little consideration for game balance but as a benefit to the devs, would cost very little (development wise) to do. There's very little actual content to it at all, and engineering boils down to long range fetch quests with crummy rng as the reward.
