Is Fdev Guilty of Any of This?

Here is an interesting (IMO) video about microtransactions in games. At the very least it makes points worth thinking about. But you really have to listen to the whole thing to understand; bailing half way through, you will miss the point I think.

To what extent is FDev guilty of any of this? And is it ok?

I was/am gonna watch, but first ill put my two penny's in lol.
Well, they need to pay for the games upkeep, updates and server costs oh, and not forgetting staff wages an so on.. One thing ill say tho, at least its not pay to win, anything bought with real money is only cosmetic, im happy to pay my hard earned cash to support the game, i care to much to let it fail lol
It is a business after all chum! 😊 ill be back once I've watched lol

Edit: Okay, I've watched... Umm, yeah this has no bearing on my game tbh, its not really applicable to ED, the part at the end sums ot up. Although i get why you posted, it's kinda widely known this has been going on, a lot of games are guilty of certain points in that vid, ea anyone lol o7

When somebody presents a video without really putting any of their own meaningful discussion to start a thread, it's like being asked to read a book by somebody who won't even tell you what they thought of the book.

If this thread is to be a discussion on some video, you first. Otherwise this just looks like some clickbaity rubbish I don't want to give my attention to.

If FDev does these things or not should be pretty objective and things you could answer on your own. But I can guess that the answer is "no", because all of the things you buy in ED are entirely cosmetic and that doesn't "ruin" anything, even for outrage-driven Youtubers.

When FDev ever are going to sell stuff that has an in-game benefit, I'll be the first to get out my pitchfork, soapbox + stuff to build a barricade and whatnot.
Untill then? I'm quite fine, and sorry no, I don't have the time to watch a 25 minute video on the subject.
Not taking anything away from it, it could very well be an interesting clip, and pay-to-win especially when/if implemented in a game targeted towards children is a subject worth talking about. I just suspect it has no bearing on Elite Dangerous as it is.

I didn't watch the video. Frontier is a game company. Nothing more or less.

OK, I did watch the video. This video is talking about micro-transactions to get players to spend real money to keep playing the game. iPad game programmers love this providing the game for free then lots of purchasable options to advance in the game which can get very expensive. Frontier Developments has never done this with Elite Dangerous. Not to say that they won't consider it if they ever go to an iPad version. But in a very competitive gaming market they have not done it so far and good for them.

Too late, ED has always been P2W. Don't believe me, just ask yourself this: did you have to pay to buy the game? Of course the answer is a resounding YES, so this game is definitely PAY-2-WIN. Every aspect of this god awful game is P2W, FD should be locked up for grand theft, I've half a mind to call Interpol right now!

Even their subtle microtransactions are P2W - I have outfitted all my ships in Vibrant Red with Red Engine exhaust cos it is a proven fact that any red vehicle is the fastest.

That was a great video. Thanks!

I LOL at our "great" community that works so hard to justify NOT watching the video. You guys are pathetic.

Anyway, no, I don't think FDev is guilty of this but lots of interesting points in the video nonetheless (e.g., the two main ways of selling something to somebody).

I also applaud you OP for NOT taking a stand one way or the other. Too many people who do that on these forums just get attacked and they make you, the OP, the subject of the thread. Again, our dysfunctional community at its worst again. So good job staying out of the sights.

Outfitting an ED ship with a cool paint job, custom ship kits, decals, engine exhaust and weapon colors are all about the ego and vanity of the player using them and feeling better personalizing their ship. It is totally OK and I have a lot of ships I wouldn't fly because I didn't personalize them. But it is not a micro-transaction as the video might suggest.

Guess you didn't read the fine print huh

I've seen the good and the bad side of these.
I've witnessed the start of the Oblivion Horse armour DLC - and people were appalled.
I've played ESO, where you have limited bag space in free mode and unlimited in paid mode. It's great to let people experience the game a bit for free and let them sub if they want to.
WoW makes it simple: Full game, buy the expansions or not, anything cosmetic like pets and mounts are optional.

I don't mind the lifestyle approach to things. Doesn't effect the game, and if you want that sparkly unicorn mount, then cough up the money. Else you will have to make due with the normal horse, that will ride just as fast as the Unicorn.

I've read it way too many times dealing with British lawyers who could care less about the game.

Funny, never said I was a British Lawyer and yes I do care about the game. But since you are so quick to jump to conclusions, I will reiterate my 'fine print'

You seem to think that I am replying to your response personally. That is the problem with texting as it can be taken 10 different ways. It has nothing to do with you but a history of British lawyers trying to take advantage of the game Ian bell and David Braben came up with. They saw an opportunity to make money. I have a better appreciation for sharks in the ocean understating that they are just looking for their next meal.

Whatever. You are right and I'm wrong if it pleases you. End of discussion.
