Is frontier using AMD's FSR a botchy way of "optimizing" Odyssey?

That is because you're using 0.85! SuperSampling only does its thing from 1.0 and higher. Anything below that looks like butt cheese.
The performance will decrease as you go higher obviously but that's computers.
Yes, I know, technically 0.85 should be called "subsampling", but the setting doesn't change name in game when you put it below 1.
FSR Ultra Quality is <0.85 subsampling, plus the algorithm, so looking better than "the subsampling necessary for performance" is a bonus.

And since I only have the recommended spec here, the 1.0 (and no FSR) I'd prefer to use runs terribly at 1080p anywhere inside, so I certainly can't turn it above 1.

Like with any other algorithm, the output depends upon the input. You can do magnificent upscaling with FSR, but if the input flickers due to lousy anti aliasing, then the upscaled image flickers as well.

This image was 1080p. Then it was downscaled to 720p, using a Gaussian algorithm and saved (thereby losing more than half of the image information). The downscaled image was then upscaled back to 1080p using a old school Lanczos algorithm. Still a pretty decent image:

Many of the problems with upscaling arise when what you see isn't a still image, but something that moves. Then all the tiny errors become obvious. Anyone who have tried to rotoscope knows that.

People on forums been demanding AMD FSR for month on end, FDEV enable it, players on forums, "is FDEV cheating by using AMD FSR?"

Yeah, silly but expected at this point. At least FD is trying to find ways to make EDO performance not terrible. Though it is funny that having players drop their resolution and upscale it is where we're at. "Similar performance to EDH" :ROFLMAO:

Typical forum logic, been around for ages. Ask for something for months, complain about it when it’s implemented.

Just look at the current situation we’re in, it’s all due to the Fortnite kiddies demanding that they shove an FPS into my space sim! (Disclaimer, this sentence is sarcasm intended to poke fun at the people I’ve seen around here who actually tout this line. I’m well aware that Space Legs was part of ED’s plans as early as a 2002 interview with David Braben, a literal decade before ED’s Kickstarter.)

"Ships were designed with interiors in mind"

"EDO will have similar performance to EDH"
First one was a kickstarter vision, not a promise. Start asking yourself this... why is the Anaconda the ONLY ship in the game that has damage models? None of the other ships in the game have those, as far as I know... That doesn't mean other ships will not get them in the future, or that interiors is off the slate... but you think that Odyssey introducing space legs actually also had to have ship interiors. That is your problem. Not FDevs problem. We do not know what FDev plans for the future, if there is a future for the game...

There is a very good reason why Star Citizen, as a comparsion, is still in Alpha. These things takes LOTS OF TIME. And non of the Star Citizen ships have 100% customization yet. That is a nightmare design job to support both the ship gameplay regarding what the modules do when you fly the ship (and all of them can be 100% swappable) and combine it with meaningfull ship interiors that should represent the ship you customized.

Second one is that EDO was released way too early. No one denies that. FDev did a misstake releasing EDO as a finished DLC... they should have released it as early access at a reduced price. Not sure how they did not forsee the release of Odyssey and the following backlash.

That said, FDev are not abandoning the game. 6 patches so far proves that at least.

I think you have gotten confused with who you are replying to. I never mentioned ship interiors - I was responding to your comment at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...way-of-optimizing-odyssey.587370/post-9447969.
That is true! Late in the morning here. LOL. I do apologize. I did try to edit my response, but I was to late.

When it comes to Odyssey release, I am totaly with you that FDev should've known that EDO wasn't ready... and instead of releasing it as a "finished DLC", they should have released it as Early Access with a reduced price.

Other than that, I think those that expected ship interiors just because of space legs are guilty of their own expectations, since nothing related to the EDO marketing suggested ship interiors. :)

I hope this clears it out. Again, sorry for my misstake.
