Is ground combat planned?

I just recently read this...

"ERANIN CIVIL WAR ESCALATES
ALERT TRANSMISSION: 3300-09-29
REBELS SEIZE AZEBAN'S THIRD CITY FOLLOWING OUTBREAK OF CIVIL WAR IN THE ERANIN SYSTEM

The Azebanian provincial city of New Fresno fell to rebel forces this morning as the civil war moved into its fourth day.

Thousands of pro-government refugees have fled to Azeban's historical capital city of Fort Bradley, escaping what is believed to be, thus far, a largely bloodless rebellion.

GalNet

The weekend had seen significant government victories, thanks in large part to the participation of traders from the Pilot's Federation. Cmdrs Johnny V and Fallschirmjäger provided Eranin's government with high quantities of Combat Stabilizers and Basic Medicines, while Cmdrs Nephalim Angel and Psychopomp delivered cases of celebratory liquor in the thousands.

However, orbital strikes on grain silos by rebel craft have caused panic on the streets of New Fresno and a mass exodus of loyalist civilians that has left the city in rebel hands.

Civilians have begun hoarding medical supplies, driving demand for essential medicine while demand for luxury goods and consumer technology is plummeting. Commentators suggest the market's reaction, when it comes, will be swift and dramatic."

And the thought came to me that perhaps when the plannetary landing/exploring is implemented you could further flesh it out with actual first person combat.

Think about it, players could be involved in actual ground operations depending on faction and could possibly alter the out come of galactic story events.

Ofcource this is something like 2 years later not now obviously and i totally agree with Mr. Braben when he says "we either do it properly or not do it yet"

thoughts?

I really hope that when we can walk around space stations and on planets it doesn't turn into a FPS.

I bet there will be some combat but I hope its very little. More interested in exploration and missions. I also hope that missions aren't 'Go to so-and-so and kill/collect so many whatever and come back tom me' (the standard mmorpg fair.)

I liked the balance of FPS/Exploration in Mass Effect 2 - they got it just right.

There will be weapons to use and combat, yes. Don't expect Battlefield/COD/Planetside though. As mentioned above, rather something more similar to Mass Effect (but of course in first person), but probably not quite as intense and more focused around stealth. At least that is what I'm hoping for. You can also probably throw a bit of the hunting mechanics of Far Cry 4 in there. ;)

Hopefully not

Personally speaking, I have zero interest in an FPS component to my Elite. To me it is about flying around space, doing what we are doing now. If you want a full-on FPS, maybe check out SC?

I can not really image that there will be no combat on the surface, that would mean that as soon as explorer lands on the planet, one enters god mode. You travel through dangerous universe, you land on remote planet, and you become safe, does not feel right....

Even if they do add FPS parts to the game, like walking round the station etc , you will still have the option of never leaving your ship as is now.

The only way I see the FPS elements effecting a player who doesn't leave their ship is if they are boarded by pirates or whatever.

Myself, I like options. More options, the better. I'd like to fly my ship, stretch my legs on the observation deck, socialize in a seedy station bar, land on remote, misty planetoids...

...and whip out something like this:

Lock and load! :D

Whilst I agree that I do not want the walking/landing on planets to be like every-other FPS (COD/Battlefield).. But If all the news feeds were saying there is a war raging on the surface of X-Planet - and you visited - and there wasn't a war going on - no Battles to join - what would be the point of saying there was a war going on?

Like I said I want the expansions to be meaningful and not just another FPS - but in my view if the reports say there is a massive war going on - you should be able to join it - as much as hunting dinosaurs, going into the dodgy bar to find missions or plain exploration of planets ... It all should be there.

Game play mechanics speculation aside.

Why would you leave the safety of a high orbit to land, becoming a large well formed stationary target.
Why would you get out of you ship in a war zone?

Which is why they're leaving planet landings for a whole new expansion later down the road. It's basically a new game.

Based on what I've heard and read about it, they're planning something like Fallout (the new series) - a FPS RPG. So nothing like CoD where all you do is shoot stuff. I expect there will be a lot more to it, including non-violent activities like cataloging flora and fauna, doing ground surveys, maybe rescue missions, who knows. Lots of stuff they can do that doesn't involve blowing stuff to tiny little bits.

Yeah, i think this could be the right way to enhance this game.

From what DB has said the they will look at "big game hunting" but that's way off in the future. Personally I'm happy for them to include all sorts of game play when the time is right.

For the time being FD are concentrating on the core elite game.

Well, I can think of a few reasons...

1. A team of scientists got stranded somewhere on the planet and you can't get to them by ship. Time to ride that ATV to their location and pick them up!

2. Detailed ground survey.

3. A bunch of wanted criminals holed up in a cave system. Going in to tag 'em and bag 'em.

4. Mysterious signal detected on the surface. Needs closer investigation.

5. Gold, gold everywhere! Everyone get your bags!

6. "The Frsidian Trumpet Spider is an extremely reclusive and rare species. Right now, we were lucky to spot one feeding... shhh, we must be very quiet..." *cocks the elephant rifle*

7. Deliver a special package in person. Don't drop it!

8. Sightseeing.

Oh, you said warzone... dunno, patriotism? Maybe you're better with a gun than with a stick? ;)

Just a quick off-topic lore question: are the battle weapons available at star ports hand weapons, or vehicle weapons? Am I carrying rifles or artillery?

Yeah, sorry I was more meaning in direct reference to the Civil war on Eranin, all those you list are brilliant reasons outside that

Since there are also personal weapons, my guess is personal weapons are small arms, and battle weapons are the larger kind, or infantry weapons you'd expect to only see in military hands, like RPGs and Mortars and such.

If there is to be a FPS type of thing then it needs to follow from the space site of things.

IE exploring, mining, fighting, trading, creating bases towns and cities.

It would be a whole game in its self, have a feeling it would be more like DA2 setup with fighting and management.

Again would need a kickstarter and similar production to what we are in the middle of now but would be an awesome addition to the game, especially if they go an Avatar route, which might be the best way to go....
discover a habited resource rich planet, drop an automated base and it makes avatars you can take control of, then death would be taken care of with insurance or clones and you can decide how to exploit your find by buying different base modules back in habitable space and landing them on your claim. War with aliens or other claim jumpers, mining stealthily so as to avoid upsetting the natives or go steaming in and try to wipe them out. Explore peacefully or land a battalion. Options are endless, and it can all scale to your resources. If you are poor then you have to do it on your own but with cash then bring a colonyship! Or sell your claim to one of the big factions and walk away or help them out.

Could be awesome!

One of the things i want to see is a mining outpost that can be placed near asteroid fields. Think Outland. Remote and dangerous. Small mining ships with wild west style base. Bit easier to do and could be a stepping stone for the planet based stuff.

Wait here is a problem.
Now you loose your ship not your life. But in a FPS Combat you are dead that means you loose everything and you have to start with a new character. There are no Cloning mechanics for chars like EVE.
