Horizons Is horizons worth it yet?

In the past I was a little disappointed at Frontier for going ahead and charging for an expansion, and even offering a huge deal for 100 pounds or something, before they had even released the full game that they promised. They still haven't to this day, but Elite is a pretty fun game. I wouldn't be sitting at over 1000 hours played otherwise.

What I wanna know is, has Horizons brought anything of actual gameplay value yet? Last I heard it had been out for over 6 months and only allowed you to fly in an atmoshphere, land and take pretty screenshots, and that was it. Is there actual content here for me to do for over 100 hours now?

There are missions, salvage operations, planet-side combat (so fun!), lots of materials to gather (if such is your thing).

I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say gameplay value though as this is entirely subjective. Eg: I'm having a ball bouncing around planets in my SRV that NOBODY has ever landed on. :)

Excellent game overall. Ambitious and sprawling. Everything I want in a game -- sci fi space travel, exploration, trading, ship upgrades... no complaints. Except for those $#@*(U*( griefers...

This reply isn't helpful at all. You're just telling me what you think about the game, without telling me why. It's the why I'm looking for, and maybe what it is that makes the why.

Big time its worth it, particuarly with the 2.1 Engineers update and consider if you will the other updates slated for this season.. Some don't agree but I think this has been the best update Frontier have delievered to date, without doubt. Just don't talk to me about solo and pg and we'll get along fine :p

And don't moan about the AI/NPCs.. The increased jeopardy is awesome for the longevity of the game imo. ;)

Let me use smaller words for your sake, then. The game is still being actively developed. I like what there is so far, semi-cartoon space travel, trading at stations and bases. The graphics are superlative, it's fun to look at. I find no obvious rough edges or major failings. I do wish that Windows 10 featured 5.1/7.1 audio support.

Much appreciated :)

Its got a lot of issues, but it is much more engaging than 1.6. Considering how CHEAP the Horizons update is selling for right now, why is this even an issue? I would think anyone who enjoys this game could come up with 20 bucks!

Well you have ver1.6 now. So you already get improved performance, better graphics, added audio at stations, and improved mission boards.

Ver2.2 Horizons adds 2 significant portions to gameplay:
- modifications to gear via Engineers loot & crafting
- Planetary landings on airless worlds.

The Planetary landings are visually attractive. They include simple gameplay: rock prospection, salvage and treasure hunts. They also include Base attacks which are more involved affairs, including enemy ship defenders, AA turrets, ground turrets and skimmers. I don't care much for these Base attacks and have not done many.

The little rover/buggy is well implemented, fun to use and has a SONAR like wave scanner that is quite interesting to learn.

If you're interested in the Loot & Crafting- there's ample posts on the forums. Opinions are very mixed. If you go about it as a side interest, it can easily be integrated into regular gameplay, with the bonus payouts of gear upgrades from time to time. This is most unlike CQC or Powerplay. If you make it a primary focus, prepare for frustration as the grind to get components is mind numbing.

If landing on planets didn't impress you too much, I'd say wait.

Ship launched fighters (2.2, I think) is something I know I am really looking forward to. So much possibility in combat and otherwise. Plus I want to fly a TIE..ahem Imperial Fighter outside of CQC.

Its amazing, just for the exploring, its amazing. Yesterday I tried a mission for the first time, had to take down a generator on a settlement with a cobra and the srv... OMG!!! that was amazing and a huge challenge!! took me almost two hours to do it, and the pay was amazing, 1,5millions. But the best part was the strategy to take down one by one their defenses.... the most fun Ive ever had with this game.

And the sights! look at this test I just made, this is going to be a series "the wonders of Elite dangerous"

I will go out exploring soon and with the planetary landings, and videos like this... well... finally there is a motivation for me to go out the bubble and explore.

Go buy it, I used to hate the game a year ago, now Im totally addicted again, Horizons is amazing and this is just the beginning.

Fun hint: You don't need an SRV. ;)

Thanks guys for helping me decide. :) I have just ordered Horizons. So far, I'm still in SOlO mode (training wheels, yeah, I know, but I'm such a newbie), but sooner or later, I'll be joining the universe. If you see a dorkish guy named DDM_Reaper20, don't fret -- mostly harmless, that's me . . . ;)

If you didn't think the planetary landings part of Horizons was worth it then Engineers adds very little and what has been added isn't very good.
So no, wait till 2.2 to see if that makes it worth it.

No it isn't.

Oh yes it is!

Come on, if those who are saying it is worth it are being asked to justify it for OP, then those who are saying it isn't need to elaborate as well ;)
