Horizons Is horizons worth it yet?

If you didn't think the planetary landings part of Horizons was worth it then Engineers adds very little and what has been added isn't very good.
So no, wait till 2.2 to see if that makes it worth it.

Actually, i'd agree with that sentiment. If the landing on planets and driving the SRV wasn't enough, i'm not sure what would be. Maybe better for them to wait for 3.0!

I found myself mostly doing stuff related to planet activities. I'd really miss Horizons if they took it away.

Try ATTACKING with the SRV instead of just driving - Base assault is the most atmosheric thing to do, imo. *alert! alert!* *Klaxon sounds* *impacts around your buggy from the security ship*

Don't wake up Goliath, though!

Oh yeah, i love myself a bit of base assault.

However, went to do one for a mission the other day and there was an Elite Anaconda and an Elite Viper guarding the base. I took one look at my ship (a Cobra Mk3) and said... nope, i'm noping out of here to nopesville!

Pah! Go in tiny! SRV it! They are having trouble hitting ground targets! But check them for seeker missiles - they target srvs atm. I recommend going against railgun ships - they provide excellent bombardment effects.

In the past I was a little disappointed at Frontier for going ahead and charging for an expansion, and even offering a huge deal for 100 pounds or something, before they had even released the full game that they promised. They still haven't to this day, but Elite is a pretty fun game. I wouldn't be sitting at over 1000 hours played otherwise.

What I wanna know is, has Horizons brought anything of actual gameplay value yet? Last I heard it had been out for over 6 months and only allowed you to fly in an atmoshphere, land and take pretty screenshots, and that was it. Is there actual content here for me to do for over 100 hours now?

Horizons mostly expands on the accessible areas of ED's universe.
It does not add a lot of radically different activities, although the SRV is a great piece of design work and it is fun to drive around in once you sort out your controls.
One of the things that are a new activity is doing base assaults (mostly via missions). It is very different from what you do in space and requires a different approach, rethinking load-outs etc.
You can also pick up missions in planetary bases or do any of the stuff you can do at stations in space.

Of course now we also have the engineers down there and you can do combat with ships above the surface which is also a different experience.

For me Horizons has been worth it from the very start. I love to land on the planets and fly around there.
Some of the planetary bases are magnificent installations that remind me of the city in Bladerunner. I do wish there was a bit more variation to them though.
Being able to go down to planetary surfaces makes the experience much more complete for me (being an old Frontier Elite II fan).
I have been waiting for that ever since Braben started the Kickstarter.

Now I am waiting for them to add volcanic planets next. I hope it will be in this season. Should be quite spectacular.

When I first upgraded to The Engineers, I was one of those crying 'foul' and 'unplayable' but I stuck at it, adapted a little and got through the initial couple of weeks, only losing about four or five top-of-the-range MkIV Vipers.

I haven't trucked any stuff to any of the Engineers yet. Reading some of the posts describing the process just puts me off the whole thing. I enjoy immensely the planetary missions and I'm working my way up to an assault mission. I'm assuming those end up incurring a bounty and I have enough of those already. The added comms chatter and ATC comms around stations is a master touch in immersion. 'Your comfort is our top priority, Commander'....Yeah, Baby!!! 'Have a splendid journey, Commander'.....how very civilised. I play with headphones now, it's great.

What I would say is that there too many parts of the game that don't work properly.....mission updates asking you to deliver your X units of Random Stuff yesterday, then 'Oops. Sorry, you missed the new deadline. Your bad'. My Imperial rank progression got screwed up somehow. I'm a Master but I've had two Inboxes congratulating me on becoming a Knight, then another two congratulating me on becoming a Lord. I'm a Combat Novice but I'm still being interdicted by Expert, Deadly and Dangerous NPC's. It's not the interdictions bugging me, it's that the opponent is now supposed to be 'tailored' to your own rank. It would have been nice to get this stuff, the basics really, working before introducing Engineers who might take your hard-earned stuff and give you Thrusters-On-Steroids, but might just as easily give you a new heated loo-seat or whatever. Allegedly. I haven't tried, too busy grinding out other stuff.

If I knew when I bought Horizons what I know now, I have to say, I'd buy it all over again. Sooner.

Tried that at another base. Those NPC ships seem to have an amazing ability to spot and hit ground targets... something we players do not have the same ability to do. I got blasted by some PAs from above before i could even get close to the base.

That's the AoE I guess. I'll add PAs to my nope list, then. I REALLY recommend going against rails! This is stuff for a nice video. Not me, though, I can't handle the crappy camera.

Care to give me some context?

I'll repost something from another thread.

My current opinion is that I'm spending more time enjoying the myriad of non-engineer improvements and content that came with 2.1 — Something that a lot of people seem to skip whenever they talk about 2.1
+ Updated graphics
+ New ice ring extraction sites
+ Some of the new AI difficulty (bugged weapons not included)
+ Mission overhaul and branches
+ Station traffic control
+ NPCs flying on planetary surfaces

The actual crafting is what I've done the least of. Maybe 1-3 upgrades? (Which I discarded) I'm slowly gathering materials while bounty hunting and waiting for a new target to show up.

Things I don't like:
- NPC portrait quality. The lighting, shading and texture look like something from an older game and certainly don't match the new quality of shaders on ships.
- The loading time of the portraits.
- No storage space for certain commodities, I fly combat ships after all!

Basically this. Having tons of fun with the missions, and actually seeing how I am affecting the BGS. Of course there are issues, bugs in missions, LOD on planet approach, VR bugs (pain ful for me), oh and NO storage of stuff, which makes doing a bunch of engineer stuff difficult to say the least. But overall I have no regrets buying horizons at all, and I will most likely by 3.0 as well. I have unlocked 6 engineers, and have 1 at lvl 3. So haven't done much crafting at all. Don't care.

Another opinion: nope. Same grind mechanics repeated with a new wrapper. They keep taking the game 'sideways' as in rehashing the same limited gameplay stuff from launch. It's not any deeper.

I agree
Also, there is really no point to do planetary missions, beside having fun.

So, if you're having fun with Elite 1.6, I think you can avoid Horizons at all.
I have it and I'm playing without caring about engineers and planetary missions, and I'm still having a lot of fun.

For me Horizons is well worth getting.

I'm not bothered by the Engineers, it's all too painful imho.

However landing on planets is excellent, and has added a whole new dimension to the game. The landing approach is always a slightly nervy process, and the sometimes bumpy ride to the pad adds variety. Flying over and through canyons is a hoot, and stopping off to trundle around the surface in your buggy can be quite a laugh. So now all those pretty globes hanging in space have been made far more real for me, and some of the sights from on or near the surface can be breathtaking.

If none of that sounds good, then I suggest you wait for 3.0.

Yes, I agree.
If landing on non-atmosferic planets and drive the SRV is fun, then buy it. Otherwise, it will not add anything to the 1.6.

I get to land on planets. Worth to me! For me my dream game is Star Glider 2. So any game that resembles this will get my max love. ED now and NMS might be it later.
