Is it as good as the orignal?

I think you can't easily compare these two games since there are three decades between them. The original Elite was way ahead of most games during its time. Is Elite Dangerous way ahead of most games today? No, but in my opinion it could be ranked among the best games games toaday.

Better than the original in many ways but it's all a bit too easy.

No Thargoids pulling you out of Hyperspace and the anarchy systems offer no challenge at all.

In the original, the anarchies were horrible places. I recall brutal dogfights with half a dozen pirates descending on me simultaneously. Now I cruise through Reidquat with rarely an interdiction. Even then it's only one pirate and he's usually harmless. I need some dangerous in my Elite Dangerous.

Oh and the Asp now looks like crap.
^ Negative Nancy everybody. :D Im sure FD will tweak these exact things to the better. We all want the danger in Elite Dangerous to be more ...dangerous. And im sure Thargoids are coming (unless already in somewhere *spooky mysterious music playing*).

But yes, compared to the original it is exactly the same but better. More to come content wise (ships etc) and more features like "Wings" which is a coop expansion so you can group up with friends and others and do missions etc, and also planetary landings is supposed to come at some point. And im sure a lot of tweaking to hit the sweet spot. BUY IT and join us! ;)

Depends on what you enjoyed about the original; I guess many already spoke about it better than I could, so I will just touch a point that is quite important to me.

Elite is a single player, offline game; this means you can pause the game, reload old saves, and (with OOLite) mod about every aspect of the game to your liking. This opens a huge amount of opportunities for experimentation, for making the game the best for you, and removes some of the potential frustration (for example, loading old saves means you won't need to grind all the way back if you are killed without money for the insurance of your ship).

Elite: Dangerous is an online game. The way it uses the online element is to connect what everyone does into a single galaxy, one that supposedly evolves and changes as players play. It's a bit too early to tell how strongly this will be felt, as the game is just weeks old. It also means that the galaxy keeps changing while you are not playing, which might be good or bad depending on your preferences. That besides meeting with other players if you choose to not play in solo, of course, including the possibility of being attacked.

Whether the new online-only model is better will depend on the specific player, but it's important to keep the differences in mind as they can change gameplay a lot. For me, particularly, OOLite is currently a better game, but that is because I put a lot of importance on having control over my own game.

Graphically it's a stunner. Gameplay, not so much. In terms of what it offers it's more Elite 1.5, pitching somewhere between Elite and Frontier. There's nothing really new or substantially improved on gameplay wise aside from a reputation system that the jury's still not sure works in any significant way. Missions are generic no matter where you go. Is it enjoyable, yes, but it has very little depth past basic combat and trading. I was expecting that the gameplay would have been evolved in the same way the graphics and sound (which is staggeringly good in places and never less than very good) have been, but it's not the case. I couldn't wait to see what game FD would create from the resources modern systems have, but in the end they just stuck with what worked a few decades ago.

Personally I find that a bit disappointing.

You may be disappointed but the reality is, unlike the previous games, this incarnation will be in constant development (FD have constantly told you/us this). It also has loads more room to be developed graphically and in complexity. I'd have thought you being here as long as you have, you'd have noticed that little fact to pass it on.

Been waiting for this for ages but as the title says. Is it as good as the orignal?

Lets put it this way, it is as good as the original and better in many other ways. If you have been waiting for it for ages, I'd suggest you get it and get onboard and get ready for the ride! the comparison I'd put here is it's like seeing EVE Online in its very early days, a gem that once polished will shine like no other. Others here have point at what it doesn't have, I'd point at what it does. An epic fighting feel, (for those who actually take time to learn how to fight with flight assist off and on, and of course you will), a galaxy that is modelled on the real thing. The feel that, once tweaked, the gaming universe we are living in here is really going to come alive. The feel that when ship/station movement comes about it will turn it into a whole new game. The feel that when planetary and moon landings come about it will again feel like a whole new game. The feel that this is just the beginning of the ride into the vast unknown and we are being privileged to see it develop into something totally unbelievable! No my friend, you'd be mad not to pick yourself up a copy. I've been in this place before some 11 years ago in EVE Online, you know what? I wouldn't miss this for the world! :)

The view is actually locked for the moment, but when the ship opens up ... just think about it. Watch here:
