General / Off-Topic is it just me or......

Are some people in this forum just looking for an argument?

mentioning no names but I've seen posts that agree 100% with what they quote yet the person who is quoted still comes back, miss quotes the post and tries to create a fight where none exists.

it seams the only way to respond to some people without getting a re-quote reply and an invitation to find friction is to respond 'yes, absolutely, i agree with every thing you said.' anything more is often taken out of context and thrown back in your face.

This is the same on all forums - There are always a load of trolls out there looking for conflict - Hence why forums need moderators :p

yea, I was an admin on a rather large tech forum a few years ago so know all about trolls, it just seems there is a lot more flaming than i'm used to. i guess talking about computers isn't as contentious as talking about the design of a game.

not that I'm letting anyone wind me up (much) i'm too laid back for anything but a direct personal attack to make me bite and i ignore most of those as bad for my blood pressure, what does concern me is if someone takes it a bit farther than realize and ends up getting a punch in the mouth at the launch party.that wouldn't do anyone any favors.

not something I'm concerned with as one look at the size of me will convince you to keep your fist to yourself - not boasting but i'd look down on most if not every other member of this forum, I am that tall

i trust the mods (with a bit of help from user reports) can handle the most overt stuff but they cant know what's going on in peoples heads and some people can turn into real psychos if they feel thier opinion has been devalued.

I remember playing mob wars on facebook and some users quitting as they started getting threats connected with the game, a way over the top reaction on the part of the one issuing the threats but those sort of people do unfortunately exist.

With that in mind I'd like it if people dialed down the confrontation a bit and didn't take it so personally when someone holds a view that differs from the one they hold.

I've not had much confrontation myself here, and skim over idea wars and reciprocal disagreements but I have skimmed a lot, even deferred posting due to a few threads becoming a little noisy for my taste. It might just be the volume of postings here, and the "emotional attachment" carried by many as mentioned elsewhere in the forum that has caused what we see.

Misquotes bug me, and the number of self appointed thread "moderators" who seem to think they need to summarise points in their own language every few posts. The real FD team and mods can do that without warping our ideas.

Maybe everyone just needs to chill a bit and remember we are only influencing the game, not designing it.

:rolleyes:It really isn't as bad as some games design forums I take part in.
Also there has been a lot of new people lately - that always makes it worse.
I myself have a lot of emotional investment in Elite so I find myself needing to discipline my posts to stay on-topic and not just use the fact that I am posting to make my favorite point... again... - so I can kind of understand when other people do it.
The age old remedy of not feeding trolls is the best when they do arise though.
Have to say that even the conflict has been generally constructive here. I have even read some posts that have caused me to change my opinion... a bit... and that is pretty rare.

I would say blame alcohol and the fact that forums do not portray emotions.
now what was that you said about my mother.

Personally I don't take anything written on a forum to heart, if you don't like my opinion then fine... I might try to reason it back to you... but I won't start you flaming you or turn it into an argument. Hell, people have reasoned why my idea has a flaw and I turn around and say "Good point, didn't think of that" or whatever...

I think people get a bit 'precious' when it comes to Elite Dangerous, not just because it's part of the their special memories of when they were growing up but also they have put some kind of financial backing into something they want to see get made 'their' way...

... I respect that and but so should they!

-

The thing I find annoying, is when someone clearly just reads original post, hits post reply, reads the last post... completely missing a post that you made which points out the now generally accepted fatal flaw in a game mechanic...

Example
:-

Post 501
Yes but you can't have walking on a Sun's surface because you'd die

Post 502 to 505
Yes very true

Post 506
Ok, so how do we sort out about EVA near a Star

Post 511
You could avoid that, by walking on the Sun's surface
