Newcomer / Intro Is it necessary to be pledged to a superpower to gain rank in empire?

I see from my status menu that my rank wirh empire is still "none", but the percentage indicator is 100% and has been for a while. .. what do I need to do to advance?

You don't need to be aligned to any superpower to gain rank. Once your percentage indicator reaches 100% at some point on the missions board ( an Empire station in your case) a naval ranking mission will spawn, which upon successful completion will cause you to be promoted to the next rank. Be patient and just keep an eye out for these missions as they do not spawn as frequently as other missions . If you are trying to rank up further than one promotion , don't worry , keep racking up missions as the percentage rewards for them keep clocking up in the background as you will see when you complete a naval mission for the promotion.

If the OPs Imperial rank is still showing as "none" then presumably the first thing he needs to do is actually join the Imperial navy?

I've only joined the Fed's but presumably it'll be a similar sort of thing, whereby you need to look for actual MILITARY missions in order to join and then, later on, gain rank?

I don't think that this is the case , I think your rank percentage is just added depending on the allegiance of the station that you take normal missions from i.e missions from Sol will give you Fed rank , missions from Achenar, Empire rank. The OP is showing as no rank because despite running missions from an Empire system and gaining percentage points , he has yet to accept and complete an Empire Naval ranking mission.

These missions can be elusive. But if your previous rank progression bar is at 100%, you will find one, eventually. It's easier if you keep yourself at one place and get allied with the imperial factions (with the imperial logo next to them)
The mission will have the word "Navy" in its name.

Ok, thanks. I am actually 100% wirh empire and 75 with federation, since I have been on the border much... can I rank with both or I have to choose?

Originally, the Navy progression missions completely spammed the bulletin board, with like 10+ missions of "NAVY ASCENSCION".

I took at a screenshot when they switched to the current system, which was quite some time ago (hence the date on pic below).

The missions are more subtle now and there's usually only 1 on the entire board — it will look something like this;

Either or both

Hi there,

All rank-up missions for the empire cointain the words "Imperial Navy" or "Imperial Naval".

They also list a rank increase in their contract.

Thanks,
Dom

While we have your attention Mr Corner can you give us some of your wisdom and insight into the attainment of rank progression? Really asking in terms of how the increase in effort changes as one progresses up the ranks ?

That's what I'm talking about.

You can do as many missions that'll increase your, erm, "prestige" (I forget the proper term) within the Empire as you like but until you do a proper "military" mission, you aren't actually part of the navy so you don't get rank.

As you say, once you DO finally complete a military mission, your previously-earned "prestige" will be put toward future ranks.

Not sure if there's any truth in this but I read, somewhere, that military rank-up missions are usually found in systems that are in "outbreak".
No idea what the link is (maybe the military shows up to control outbreaks?) but whenever I've been impatient to find a military rank-up mission I have always found one in an "outbreak" system.
Course, that might just be confirmation-bias.

I'm actually in a similar position myself.
My Imperial "prestige" has been sitting at 100% for months but I never bothered signing up.
Now I've got a hankering for an Imperial Courier so I need to find myself an Imperial navy mission.

Sorry you are correct , the way you worded your statement confused me to thinking that you thought there was a process of joining a factions Navy that was other than the current method of accepting Naval rank up missions.

FWIW, I just arrived in Cubeo and, literally, the first time I docked at Medupe City there was an Imperial Navy delivery mission waiting for me.

Took it, completed it and got promoted straight to the rank of "Master", which means I can now buy an Imperial Courier... which was really the entire reason for deciding to visit the Empire.

Grunt.... now i found a navy mission (in a system whisr status is "none") but it requires cordial status with the faction, and there is no other missuon from that faction... I am just going to stop looking for them. Sooner or later...

I know this is probably annoying to hear , but if you are going to concentrate on ranking up , it is useful "adopt" a system and work from it solely for a while , that way while you are waiting for a rank mission you can continue to benefit from strong status with all factions within the system . There are some systems that offer missions to only one other system nearby , (due to their location on the edge of, or away from the bubble), where in addition to multiple missions of a similar type, you can also make an awful lot of money. I am not sure if it still works but out a Sothis , about 250ly from the main inhabited systems, it was once possible to fill your hold with Biowaste and run this back to the Bubble for a considerable amount of cash. You would need a large ship capable of doing the journey in 20 to 30 jumps to avoid going mad from the tedium of the witchspace placeholder screen , but you could regularly pull in 20 to 40 million credits for a round trip, and these mission would also credit your ranking percentiles. But your ship would forever stink of poo and you would have to live in the knowledge that you made your fortune in ****. I still think that there should be a compulsory paint job for those who are sitting on millions made this way and it should be the worst colour of Brown that can be imagined.

Are there inhabited systems out of the bubble? Really?

one or two !

There is a useful little function on the galaxy map whereby you can adjust a pair of sliders to show max and min populations, these are useful if you are looking to find small populations in more remote part of the galaxy. Obviously the further you move from the bubble then less chance there is of finding them , but there are a few out there. Or if you are feeling very ambitious there is Colonia , 22,000 ly from Sol , a space station in the middle of nowhere, with a small but growing community that is slowly colonizing a very remote part of space , the space station having been piloted there by a rather interesting android barman called Jacques, after whom the station is named .

Try typing Colonia into the galaxy map search function and stare in wonder as it scrolls across the universe to get there, and then work out how many jumps it would take you to get there. I did it early this year in an Annaconda , engineered to a 35 ly jump range and I think it tool me something near 800 jumps

Aditi and Maia are two other systems worth having a look at , closer to the bubble though so achievable without a massive jump range

Aditi is good fro Empire rank increase and moderate money earner in the meantime (occasionally a block of long range delivery missions or base attack missions will pop up for a big money earning).
.
If you just float around then you will not be friendly with the locals and find it much harder to find missions you can do.
