is it possible to change faction ?

Its not because you never join one.
You can be highest rank with all nations and still be hostile on all of em if you want

Now that's interesting.i am warrant officer with the federation.does that mean I can rank up in empire too ?

Yea, you can. Double-agents have always existed even in real life, so why not in game. Don't see a problem there.

For me, I stick with Empire, although I could rank up with all of them. What you do is just a matter of how you perceive your character.

I've never been allied to more than one in the same system to check this out more...

press 4 and the first option in the list is "Faction". I was thinking that if you were allied to more than one, you can pick one.

If you mean "Faction" under the functions menu, that is just for who you fight for in combat zones, nothing more and it goes when you leave the zone

Double agents in real life had to go to extraordinary lengths to keep one of their affiliations secret. But in ED you can spend half your life trading in the Federation, getting reputation, be officially allied (information that is apparently publically available because all minor factions apparently know it) and at the same time go and do the exact same thing in the Empire. You're never treated as a potential double agent (either negatively or utlised as one) and never asked to give up your other affiliation. It's like the say "oh that Cmdr is allied with both the Federation and the Empire, but it's fine, we'll still give them sensitive missions". Which does seem silly to me.

That's exactly what I am doing

Yes, feel the same way since Frontier. It really spoils the feeling of immersion for me and reminds me I'm simply playing a game. Not to mention the fact that you can go and massacre loads of innocent traders, have a massive bounty on your head, yet still carry on being awarded and promoted as if you never did anything wrong. I think the developers really need to make people pick sides and add proper penalties so that players are forced to think about the consequences of their actions more.

If so how ?

You're more like a freelancer... working for whoever will give you attention. It's been my goal since launch to work my way up in the federation... I've made it to Warrant Officer... but somehow along the way I'm now also a Baron with the Empire, and I think I'm allied with more Independent governments, factions and small time family mafia rings than anyone else... Funny that.

Space is an interesting place.

I try to stay friendly with everybody...

It's better for business.

You betcha.

In my opinion, it doesn't.

for a couple reasons.

1. The galaxy is a huge place. There are literally trillions upon trillions of human beings, many of whom who will share a name, and perhaps even other vital details. It would be quite hard to reconcile databases of people in this universe.

2. It's not like the Empire publishes a list of their agents for the Federation to check their ranks against. This kind of data is highly confidential for good reasons.

3. Because of 1. and 2. they base their attitude towards you instead on your -actions- which the faction standing represents.

The only thing I think is a little silly is that you don't lose your rank if you become hostile with a major faction... holding rank in several factions is fine to me because of the data issues that would be created if they wanted to actually check up on you.

Double agents in real life were one of several hundred spies on one side, in an equally small population on the other side. Even then, it was hard to find them. Now we're talking about hundreds of thousands of agents mixed into trillions and trillions of people.

A nightmare of exploding complexity to try to map out. It's easier to record people who act against you and take revenge on them.

Some fun theories here. But since the game does not revolve around the one "hero" like in SWTOR or something, and that not everyone in the universe can be a pilot while at it, a general ignorance of what the main bulk of pilots are up to, seems incompatible with any kind of society that deal with identities in a future supposedly capable of effectively processing data. We're not talking about the occasional oddball here. More like half of the pilots more likely. And that's a conservative estimate. ;)

It's even sillier than that. A couple times I've been offered a federation progression mission in an empire aligned system+station.

Probably a Federation group you were trading/doing missions for. When you're in system, right panel far-left tab (main one), scroll through the right-side panel - shows factions per group per system.

Quite often I see see two factions there. Where I am at currently they are usually a mix of Independent and Federation.
