Engineers Is it possible to get materials by wake scanning?

I ask because the Ianara page seems to suggest it is:

Very common

Wake Scanning

However, having bought a wake scanner and scanning quite a few wakes I'm not having any luck getting any data by doing it (although I have managed to get this data type from USS data beacons)

Yes, and for some it's the only way to get them.

Ok thanks, I guess I just haven't scanned enough. Wonder if it makes any difference if I do it from SC or normal space..

Yes. I flew around a station last night Wake Scanning and found at least 5 "A Typicals" in a matter of 15 minutes, you might have to be fairly close to pick up the Data but it is done automatically.

You must scan high wakes (from non SC) to gain materials. Camp outside a station at around 10KM and scan everyone jumping.

So far I have had lots of results from taking a suggestion from this forum: leave the station, hang around and follow NPCs leaving the station. When they Hi-Wake, scan away......helps if you are in a system with some activity of course! The post also suggested hanging around a system with a Community Goal, but I haven't bothered with that yet.

I don't think you can get 'materials' per se, but I have gotten quite a good deal of data by wake scanning around stations, as well as just scanning passing ships in supercruise. The data component for crafting has so far, for me, been the easy ones to get.

This. I was doing this for an hour and had plenty of the mentioned Materials. Dont forget to equip a Wake scanner.

Yep, I'm there now, got more data than I can shake a stick at. I was attempting it from SC to begin with but hanging round like a bad smell by the stations is the way to do it.
