Is it possible to LOSE money selling ships?

I've had an unusual decline in my amount of credits. My net worth dropped 9 million more than it should be.

I did die 2 times in the last week, one rebuy was 900k and another rebuy was 1.1 mill.

I was not trading I was only doing faction delivery missions.

I achieved a rank so I bought a fed dropship. I sold it for a Vulture. Before that I had an ASP, Before that a T7 for mining.

So I have swapped ships quite a bit buy my net worth keeps going down. How is this possible that I have lost 9 million ?

In Powerplay I am LYR so I do get some sort of discount on ships. If I sell them back it should be at the same price right?

You lose a percentage of the hull and module cost each and every time you sell a ship or module. That percentage is based upon what you paid for the ship.

So, yes, you are bleeding cash if you switch ships a lot.

You are kidding..

When did this change? It used to be on par..

Dang.. that reaaaly sucks.. I was close to a python and now I'm a good 9mil away..

You totally lose any flexibility this way. If I feel like mining I can't sell my vulture anymore.

Awhile ago. First you lost nothing, then you just lost money on the ship, but not modules. Now you lose money on both. It helps sink some money out of the game, so I doubt they're falling over themselves trying to add module storage.

It has been this way for a very long time.
You still don't lose money in the Outfitting, so you can still experiment freely. Only when you are selling the ship, you lose 10% of her value.

The solution is simple. If you are changing roles, don't sell your Vulture. If you need money, just sell all the modules and downgrade those you can't sell and keep the bare hull stored. You always return back to her later.
That way you don't lose anything.

Sorry to say it's been like this since at least before 1.2, possibly even before 1.1
Ships sell for 90% purchase price
Modules sell for 100% purchase price
E grade and lower class modules where possible before selling. Avoid selling ships where possible but as always don't risk insurance.

It does mean you can mess with modules without any credit losses though which is nice..

Since before launch date of elite dangerous in 16.12.2014. In one of the betas before that. You have always lost 10% of value from everything on ship when you sell it on shipyard. You don´t lose any money when you sell modules on outfitting tho. They tried to change that but players wanted it back so they went back to "if module is sold in outfitting you don´t lose any money".

You make a profit of about 16,000 when you sell a Sidewinder or Cobra if you strip it first. You don't even have to leave the station to make a living. Just keep buying, stripping and selling them to make a profit.

Elite Stripper?

that definitely sounded better in my head than out loud.

You can sell ships without losing any money by buying them in systems which offer a 10% discount, or the Founders World (which has every ship/part and 10% discount on everything you buy). When you need to sell your ship, you go to a system that doesnt offer a discount. This offsets the 10% loss on selling a ship as you paid 10% less for it.

Its a pain though, as you then need to buy a small ship to get you back to a location where you can buy another ship at 10% off. But if youre talking about the big 3 ships, it could add up to 10-20 million in savings.

Are you positive on that? Have you tried it? Because to my knowledge you just sell them for 90% of the price you bought them for, no matter the initial price.

Yep tried it, works. Its a 10% loss from that particular stations asking price, not the original purchase price.

Hehe, that doesn't work (it actually used to be an Exploit at the Founders World a very long time ago).

The Shipyard always remembers the price you bought the Ship & Equipment for.
Thus, selling the Ship or Equipment is always guaranteed to be based on the original purchase value, regardless of any discounts.

Equipment sold suffers no loss (they implemented a 10% loss as a Test during a Beta - but were strongly advised to keep Equipment exempt from the 10% loss... and luckily agreed), but Ships will always incur the 10% loss based on whatever their original purchase price was.

So the old methods to most Credit-effectively sell a Ship stay the same : downgrade or sell absolutely every piece of Equipment possible before selling or trading in the Hull.

Not sure what you base your opinion on, but I base mine on trying it and seeing it work. That was about 2 weeks ago, so unless something has changed since then it does work.

Hm, that would be quite interesting.
If you can 100% confirm your findings, I'd recommend you file a dedicated Bug Report to close that possible Exploit/Unintended behaviour. I'm 100.0% sure that would be unintended.

Are you saying I can buy a ship for 15 percent off somewhere, fly it to a system that has no discount, sell it for 10 percent off and keep the 5 percent difference as profit? Seems like a pretty easy way to make unlimited money...
