Newcomer / Intro Is it possible to repair the cockpit canopy in flight?

Yes, damage can be repaired by AFMU, but if its broken you need repair limpets*

Edit: *that is repair limpet controller and limpets

If the repair limpet option is viable then you don't need to carry them yourself a friend can target you so his repair limpets fix your ship, if your canopy is broken and you are on emergency oxygen arrange such assistance out of the game as you will only have the minutes remaining in your life support for the very common D rated module that means 7.5 minutes from failure until suffocation.

As I have only ever lost a canopy during a fight and I never fight more than a jump away from a station of some sort I would head to the station that is nearest in time terms, remember a jump to an adjacent system with a station near the star will be a minute plus the short cruise a distant station in your current system can be too far, I have run out of air just above the pad of an outpost. Which is another point you have to land at an outpost if you fly through the slot of a station you will be in atmosphere and OK.

I've lost a canopy in space twice and made it back fine - I A-rated all my core internals so managed to make it back to Jameson's on supplementary oxygen.

It creeped me out though - I mean; it's a bit of an odd feeling getting a faceful of Witchspace racing back to safety. :) And fortunately the non-HUD instruments are more than adequate to fly to a station without difficulty.

In a RES bounty farming situation or similar and assuming that you have upgraded the default life support to D grade, the Oxygen lasts for 7.5 minutes, which will guarantee you enough time to get to a station that's within 1000ls of the RES. With luck, you can get 1500ls, but if the station is 3000ls away, you're in trouble. Also, in your trip to the station, you have to fly directly away from the planet with rings until you're clear of its gravity before you turn to the station., and you must avoid going close to other planets along the way. I learnt all these things the hard way. you have a chance to learn from my mistakes.

To summarise, if the station is more than 2000ls from the battle-grounds, don't go there in a ship that's likely to get its canopy blown off when you only have d grade life support.

Or, you might just see to it that you have the materials needed to synth emergency oxygen refills ;)
It is all very common stuff and easy to come by.
