Newcomer / Intro Is it possible to Supercruise to another star system?

Has anyone tried supercruising to a nearby star in another system (no, not within the same system like Alpha Centauri). According to the wiki

    • It would take 4h 22m 51s to travel 1 light year at maximum Supercruise speed.

So for a nearby system it would be possible. Just wondering if anyone's tried it? ;)

No, you'd run out of fuel before making the distance.

Also the game design isn't robust enough to propagate the system you're travelling to correctly without the "buffer" of a hyperspace jump - which is a plot device enabling the game to load the data and artifacts for the area you're jumping to. This was demonstrated in Alpha (before we had fuel constraints).

Heh, thanks for that :D It seemed theoretically possible, just really really boring ;)

I'd do it just because I can. It's a shame that we can't do that thouvthough, it would be a good way to sneak into Sol without a permit!

I was trying to do this just a moment ago. I had been in system BD+40 2905a travelling to BD+40 2903. The distance is 0.23 Ly, the same as Proxima and Alpha Centauri, but unlike the Cenauri system which is one system, these are really two systems extremely close to each other so I thought if I want to try it, the travel time won't be extremely time and fuel consuming. So having tried that I can confirm that it is impossible to supercruise between two systems.
The fact that these two systems were so close together however, raises a question: Why the Centairi system can't be done in such a way? It would make people happy that they wouldn't have to supercruise 1/4 Ly.

I'm sure it would be possible to fly to another system in SC and not jump, and would use the same amount of fuel as the jump.

It would just take much, much longer.

Has anyone tried?

Edit, just re-read the above post.

What happened when you tried?

Let us know how you get on.

Multiple Answers:
There needs to be a jump to trigger the instancing between systems.
The devs have also said that they don't want people circumventing the permit system.
You'd take massive wear and tear to your ship, even if you had enough fuel. Check out what happens when you SC to Hutton Orbital for 75 minutes plus.
Someone has has tried to do it, spent 9 hours in SC. Failed to trigger change in system, as per point 1.

I recall reading someone on this forum had tried, and failed (even though, at the speed he got to, the other system was not that far away). It is probably because each system is an entity in it's own right, and can only be accessed via 'Hyperspace'.

Nope it is not possible. There is a video out there on YT where a guy use like 9 hours in supercruise to another system but when he finally gets there its just a little dot on the wall kind of a thing. He passes it and turns around and pass it again. Its just kind of a nav beacon. There is nothing there so dont try.

As was said few posts above, there was nothing, but if you want to know in details:

I sped away from the first system towards the other, it was locked and the star was inside the target circle. My speed went up to 2001c (I wonder if this is some connection to the Space Odyssey :D), and stayed there.
As you know, when travelling betveen two stars in binary systems, you constantly accelerate until you are about halfway to the destination, at which point you start to gradually decelerate. This didn't happen.
When I was closer, some 2 000 000 Ls away from the (apparent) destination, I noticed that the star dot was not exactly in the center of the target circle and when I arrived there was nothing. The target circle was an empty space (just like if you targeted nav beacon or asteroid belt cluster) and I was unable to enter it (I tried but since there was nothing to "slow" my acceleration, even a click of my acceleration button catapulted me from the idling 30km/s to above light speed, meaning I was unable to approach to less than 1 Mm). At least we now know that the star field is just a background image with the neighboring star systems targets placed in such a way that they appear to be locked on a star dot.

As has been mentioned someone did try this (the 9 hours journey-guy; he didn't sit there the whole time, but left the computer running!).

And as was pointed-out Elite is a series of "rooms" connected by hyper-space jumps, each "room" containing the system and everything within it at that time. An entire, seamless galaxy would be incredibly difficult to model and run easily, what with all the players and objects etc.

Actually YZ Ceti and Tau Ceti are only about a 1 LY apart, you could fly that in SC and still have juice left in the tank, but your right in that it won't amount to anything, other then a story to tell.

Ah I haven't bumped into any systems yet that were that close. That strikes me that unless at some point the way of loading assets for the new system is changed (from just being via the H space "loading screen"), FD are leaving a hole in the game by permitting SC travel to extend that far.

I would say in 99% of cases that any given set of stars are too far apart to be able to make it in SC, well maybe except the core too, those stars are pretty close together.

I wouldn't worry about it, like I said it's nets you nothing, so what's the harm?

I'm glad I read this post before I tried lol but couldn't they add middle rooms?Deep space,federation space,alliance space,empire space,known space,unknown space.
For people who have less jump distance.if they wanted to they would to supercruise the distance of the room to get out?Just an idea :)

I agree, it's not exploitable or advantageous, but it is a repeatable bug/glitch. I hope FD either fix it so that assets are loaded by other means (preferable) or prevent SC travel extending that far (not preferable but easier to do via the fuel mechanic).

Why fix it? Because you will always have people, who given the nature of the game will attempt it, then complain when it doesn't work as expected. :)
