Is it time to decom the carrier?

I was just thinking to myself, given the awful jump times we're now seeing for carriers, it might be time to just decommission it. I don't do colonisation (it doesn't appeal) and I don't have many mats up for sale on my bartender.

It's convenient for offloading data during a long exploration trip, but old school explorers don't seem to need the FC.

Then there's the fact your crew don't know who you are, tritium movement needs a better mechanism than via ship and mining said fuel is such a chore.

I know all that sounds like I've already made up my mind, but I haven't.

What are your thoughts?

If you feel that way about it, then you should decommission it, for sure.

I'll keep my ones active, they do serve good purpose, for me, and I don't particularly care if the staff don't recognise me, nor do I mind moving fuel around manually, after all, it is only needed every 8 full jumps or so.

I love mine for one thing: cargo handling while switching ships. I usually strip all ships when storing them, so most have no CRs in them. If you now have a full hold, but want to switch to a different ship, you usually can't do that without a carrier. With it, you just transfer the cargo, do your swapping, get back the cargo. Another advantage is storing corrosive stuff.
Besides that it is of course my mobile home, with all assets in it. No more worrying about where to store what to keep transfer times low and cheap.

More doom and gloom, love it.

I wouldn't want to play without a carrier anymore, and I neither explore nor trade with it. It's my mobile home base, and I am not decomissioning it just because I forgot that our ships can jump to and so try to do 10ly jumps every ten minutes.

I know it's not going to be popular, but Frontier shouldn't have caved on the jump times in the first place.

I don’t even have a bartender, I will probably do some colonisation in a few weeks but may not use my carrier.

I am not an old school explorer and didn’t do a long exploration trip until after I got my FC however I have rarely needed to do multiple jumps in a day two jumps a week is about the norm. So the current timer durations do not have a significant impact on my play.

Not bothered by my anonymity, Tritium movement is a bit of a chore but for me a fairly infrequent one (though one I think I need to do again soon) mining for Tritium large scale is something I have avoided so far thanks to buy orders.

As long as it isn’t parked somewhere awkward and you don’t need the credits why bother, if you need one in a hurry in the future it will be quicker to wake this one up than commission a new one.

The FC changed my whole game, opening up new styles and opportunities of gameplay from heavy bulk trucking to true independence out in the black (including safe logging of those invaluable first discos).
It's also proven its worth shipping bulk materials to the more remote colonisation sites.
Currently, with the congestion around flight slots, it introduces the jeopardy of booking a jump slot an hour or more in advance and then rushing around trying to complete my planned activities before the lockdown for jump.
It hosts my fleet of 40 ships, the majority of which are carcases providing storage slots for engineered modules, but jolly convenient none the less.

I've no intention of throwing out the Fleet Carrier with the insolent Flight Crew.

I'm keeping mine busy - might even get a 4th to help with the builds. Once you work out how to jump without worrying about time slots the hour wait is not really an issue as there are always others to load/unload 🤷‍♀️
When I started playing today the timeslots were 25 minutes. Every jump got worse, last one 10 minutes ago was at 1:15 hours.

But now my Carrier is 4000 ly out of the bubble and I can start exploring in earnest. Did I mention the Mandalay is OP for exploration?

I've a little under 82,000 ly on the clock with mine and I'm still not tired of having all my stuff in one place and with 'transfer fees' being a few tons of tritium for 35 ships.

Something I do accept is even when we have the smoothest of buttery smooth servers, my 55 ly Krait is still going to be much faster at getting where I'm going. All the carrier needs to do is be closer to me than the closest station in the bubble.

Indeed.

For the mundane stuff, such as moving ships around, it's cheaper (for me) to have an FC and pay Cr10m Upkeep per week instead of transferring a bunch of ships, at up to Cr1m a pop, multiple times per week.
And, of course, it gives you a base, where you know all your ships and modules are located, and can all be summoned (usually) within a few minutes.

And then there's the new gameplay they provide, allowing you to bulk-trade stuff and monkey around with the BGS, as well as little adventures you can go on.
You haven't really FC'ed until you've shipped 20kt of booze up to Rackham's Peak... just the once, mind you.

What's currently happening isn't great but it's either going to calm down and return to normal or FDev are going to have to do something to fix the issues.
In either case, normal service will be resumed... eventually.

I never know what ship I'll need for a given star system until I get there with the MkV scout and see whats going on. I send the Big Boat at the same time I set out in the scout so that I will have all my options available to me when I start doing whatever it is that I'm going to be doing in that system.

.. no exploring :D

I don’t even have a bartender,
I had a bar on carrier, then went to get a beer there and all it was is shady characters who eyeballed me like some pubs where you know you shouldn't be <down pint quickly and leave🥵>.
Got rid of it and now keep beers, nuts, crisps, spirits and mixers in my captains cabin (is there even one on my FC like in Mass Effect?), but no-one visits and so always alone

Any one do the side mission in ME3 where you went to the nightclub to assassinate a Gang Boss - you could order drinks, chat to the bartender and even dance drunkenly/awkwardly.
I would like the same in FC or stations, where instead of 'point' or 'salute' to other CMDR's you could have a 'shuffling' or wiggle' or a full-on rave' move 🤘🤘
