Is it worth it to upgrade from an ASP to a Python?

Hi Cmd KEBO here,

Currently my ship is a ASP Explorer and is suited up for a variety of 'activities'.
I am currently 'grinding' freight runs of Imperial Slaves to save up for a Python.
This will take me about two weeks (not fun).

If I just give into the game and find my own story, I calculated that I might as well forget about saving for a Python.
By the time I have enough credits, I will be too invested emotionally to my ASP.

For others who have made this jump between ships,
is it really worth it?

BTW, I would not be looking to upgrade past the Python...

Thanks!!

I made the upgrade a week or so ago. Yes, it is worth it. Though I couldn't bring myself to sell my AspX, so I had to trade for a bit longer and do CGs to earn the money.

So far I don't have the itch to go beyond the Python. I guess my next multi-role will be an Anaconda, but that is a long way off yet, and I'm in no hurry to get there.

I would just keep saving up and have both ships. They both excel in different categories. The Asp is definitely more versatile and better for exploration and smuggling aka quick ship with high jump range. The Python is a larger medium ship with reduced speed and jump range but with more slots, better suited to be a tank/fighter, and a better ability to be a mining/cargo ship.

I would not have thought the jump range would matter but...

Yesterday I traded in for a type 7 to increase my money making ventures.
Jump range totally made that experiment a frustrating experience.
Traded back for my ASP real quick!

As others have said, AspX is better for tasks requiring jumping longer distances like exploration, long-range smuggling, and possibly CGs that are quite distant from your home system (if you have one).

The Python has mediocre jump range but if you can grit your teeth it's not as bad as it could be (FDL, Corvette). However it is simply the superior ship in literally every other way. More cargo, more internals, better shields, armour, weapons.

Agreed with the previous posters, the downfall of the trade is Jumprange, in other aspects, the Pyton is a very worthy upgrade, it handles almost like the ASPx, but is considerably larger, more cargo space, enough slots to make it a worthy Miner/trader/exploration or if you are into it.. is a hull beast for combat if you configure it. it has very decent shields and hull. so it means not beeing afraid to be in open. you will need to learn to handle it a bit, cause it needs a lot of FA-Off to handle well, but is a nimble ship for it size.

But it has half the jumprange of the ASPx, so be ready to travel a lot more than you are used to.. still is somethng that most people get used to.

I made the trade some time back, now i have 2 Pyton, and 2 ASPx, they are set for differente roles... but it was my mining PYTON the ship that made me more money, and it till does.

The jump range does have me worried.
I didn't realize how much that matters until I tried using the type 7...

Do not sell your Asp, it's too versatile a cash cow.
By all means get a Python when you can afford it, I love mine and the firepower it holds, but find myself back in the Asp for CGs and smuggling half the time. Personally I've kept almost every ship I've bought, save for some Hauler taxis and a second Cobra that I stupidly stripped at a base where I couldn't refit it. Nice to have a variety of rides dotted around the bubble to change things up a bit.

I reached the point of getting a Python about a month ago, and I like it very much.

However, if you are currently finding pure back and forth trading "not fun", my suggestion would be: don't. The credits will gradually build up over time, whether from bounties, community goals, exploration or varied trading. It took me over a year to get up to the money for the Python, but I don't mind as it means that all of it was fun, and none of it was grinding!

I'm on the same track at the moment as well.

I'm thinking a minimal 100MCr to kit out a Python as a decent all purpose ship - sound about right?

I play this game for immersion and fun, so nothing is worth a grind that is neither.

Play for the fun, the credits will manage themselves.

For the record, though, the Python is a worthy upgrade from the Asp.

That's just it, if it takes me year, I will be sticking with my ASP.
By then there will just be too many great adventures associated with it.

I know many pilots use different ships but that's just not me.
I'm a one-ship man.
Playing this game, I envision a Han Solo type just looking for trouble...

I just built a Python but also kept the AspX. Ditto to the above comments, and I have been having a fun time playing with weapon loadouts. Python accelleration and decelleration are amazing for its size, but don't expect to turn that boat either in real space, or supercruise. I'll use the Python for armed trade running, but my main ship for everything else will be the AspX, except I'll always keep a Vulture in the garage for dogfighting hehe!

Yes and no - depending on what you intend to do with it. The Python only requires a medium landing pad so was ideal for the Hutton Mug CG (as one example).

I went from Cobra (Explorer variant) > Type-6 (briefly - went back to Cobra sharpish) > Asp > Python > Anaconda (sold Python to finance Anaconda purchase).

I still have these ships (I re-bought a Python when I could safely afford it). These ships are stored in two locations - along with some others I have gathered since (iCourier; iClipper; iEagle; Vulture, Fer de Lance). Once I decide what I want to do, I'll travel to where the appropriate (for me, anyway) ship is stored and then go on my merry way! :)

100m will see most of your components D rated, A rated components for thrusters, FSD etc will set you back 16MCr a pop each - as Zeta says, 200 MCr is more realistic, especially if you want a python you wouldn't mind having a fight in...100MCr will let you build a Python equivalent of the Tradeconda, off the top of my head that'd carry about 200-210 cargo, by (amazingly enough) fitting guns and shields etc that are good enough to fend off NPCs while you high/low wake away, and a lot of internal slots given over to cargo bays.

Fly your Asp (Millenium Falcon) long enough to to afford a Python (Eravana), then you can role play finding your Asp and coming home. :D
