Is mining worth it?

And if so, or even if just a fun side venture... any input on what I should add to my ship, other than the obvious laser and refinery?

Depends on what you fly and what your goals are. Trading is broken right now, so I parked my Lakon 6, and purchased a Cobra III again. When trading gets fixed (whenever that will be), I'll go back to trading. Mining is slow to get started as you have to find a good site, but it's all profit.

Just don't do like I did today: get distracted, accidently push my throttle, crashing into a roid and losing 700k of metals and my Cobra.

Mining is definitly not worth the time. i tried it for an hour today in my cobra and it got me no where, catching These stupid rocks is just horrible in 60 minutes i have only managed to chatch 3 rocks. Why there is nothing like an Traktor beam or why is the ore you mine not automaticly stored in your chargo like in every other space game?

I stick witch my trade route, on one way i make 860cr per ton and on way back only 120 but its ok, my cobra has 44 chargoslots so my Profit is around 38k per run and soon i have enough Money to buy the Transporter for 1mioCr..

Btw. if anyone knows a better trade route thats fast i would be happy to hear.

Man, I used to feel the same way you do. Give it some time and effort, and I promise you'll be glad you did. A nice benefit to mining is you will notice vast improvement in your flight skills.

Like others - I got my Cobra nicely upgraded running 200-250k/hour runs on outer system prestine metallic mining. While I'm sure its better to trade when you got a large cargo hold (aka lots of money), mining and exploration to find a good spot can be very cool and take you from your Sidewinder to Cobra in no time

I actually kept my Lakon 6 and refitted it as a miner. No offense (no guns except the mining laser) so I just run from any pirates I see, but with good thrusters it's reasonably maneuverable (and good power distributor, so I can permaboost if I do have a pirate drop by). Benefits is having a larger cargo bay so I can stay out longer, and a bigger refinery (I have a C4 refinery with 5 bins) so I don't have to throw out any of the reasonably valuable metals (plat, palladium, gold, silver) to make room for new fragments.

I like mining, and it's profitable yess, but you need to practice to be better.
It's much better than trading for me, if you get to a gas giant's belt you'll learn to maneuver, also you'll learn how to scoop.
I started with the Cobra, in 1.5 hour made 450k with 36t cargo.
Now i'm mining with the Type6 and it's fun to do it with that beast, when i fill it up it gives me around 1.5m credits :D

If you want to get friendly with a major galactic faction, you need to make friends with many associated local factions. When trading, the reputation you get seems to be based on your profit on the stuff you sell to them.

A ton of traded gold is 850 credits profit, but a ton of mined gold should be 10.000 credits profit.

I haven't tried mining, but if you do, you might want to carefully consider who you sell it to.
